3Historic Events Leading Up to Human Space
Exploration
4Rockets
- First Developed by the Chinese using gunpowder,
which they also invented. - As early as 1212, the Chinese were using rockets
to launch flaming material into enemy
encampments.
5U.S. Rockets
- Robert Goddard was the first to launch a
successful liquid-fueled rocket on 16 March, 1926
. - The flight lasted less than 3 seconds.
- Reached a maximum speed of 60mph.
- Flew to an unbelievable altitude of 41ft.
- Goddard was ridiculed for his suggestion that
rockets could take us to the moon and around the
solar system. - In 1970, 25 years after his death, his papers
were found to contain all the basic principles
necessary for flight to other planets.
6U.S. Post World War II
-
- Military enabled progress towards space
- X-1 etc
- Captured German Scientists
- The Cold War
- ICBMs
7Sputnik, Laika, and the Space Race
- Sputnik I October 4th, 1957 The Soviet satellite
Sputnik I is launched and the space age begins.
This is the first man-made object to orbit Earth. - As a sign of Soviet technological supremacy,
Sputnik I beeped. - For their next satellite, the Russians decided to
make it bark.
8Sputnik, Laika and the Space Race
- November 3, 1957 One Month after Sputnik I,
Sputnik II orbited Earth with the Space Dawg
Laika (barker).
- Explorer I January 31, 1958 The first American
satellite orbits the Earth. - Van Allen radiation belts are discovered.
9Birth of NASA
- 1958 President Eisenhower establishes a civilian
space program, the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA).
