How acne is formed
  • Acne develops when there is
  • Overproduction of oil
  • Irregular shedding of dead skin cells
  • Increase in buildup of bacteria on the skin
  • The sebaceous glands secrete sebum (oil) to
lubricate the skin. The sebum travels along the
hair shafts and then through the hair follicles
onto the skin. If too much oil and dead skin
cells are produced, they will buildup in the hair
follicle and form a plug. This plug eventually
turns into a whitehead or it may become exposed
to air and form blackheads. Hormonal changes have
been found to be the causes of an increase in the
    production of oil.

Hormonal changes
  • There are several phases in life that causes
hormones to change. These include puberty,
pregnancy and menopause. An increase in the male
sex hormones (androgens) in both boys and girls
during puberty causes the sebaceous glands to
make more sebum. Women who are menstruating
sometimes get acne before or during the cycle.
During pregnancy, there are changes in hormones
which may cause acne to develop. Even during
menopause some people experience acne due to the
hormonal changes that the body undergoes.
  • Other factors that contribute to the development
    of acne are

Beauty and Skin Care Products
  • The oil from many skin care products such as
moisturizers and cosmetics can lead to the build
of oil on the skin. Some shampoos and soaps also
contain oils that block the pores of the skin.
Some make up that is applied directly to the skin
can also lead to acne development.
