  • Benefits of the DNP
  • Potential cons of the DNP
  • DNP and education

3
The 8 Essentials of DNP curriculum
  • Scientific underpinnings for practice
  • Advanced nursing practice
  • Organization and system leadership/ management,
    quality improvement and transformation of
    healthcare
  • Analytic methodologies related to the evalutation
of practice and the application of evidence for
    practice

4
8 Essentials contd.
  • Utilization of technology and information for the
    improvement and transformation of healthcare
  • Health policy development, implementation and
    evaluation
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration for the improving
    patient and population healthcare outcomes
  • Clinical prevention and populations health for
    improving the nations healthcare

5
Benefits of the DNP
6
  • More equality among health care providers,
especially among advanced practice nurses and
    other doctorate prepared clinicians
  • More autonomy for advanced practice nurses
  • The degree earned will match the credit
    requirements of the program

7
  • There will be more doctorate prepared nurses
available to hold clinical faculty positions at
    universities
  • DNP graduates will be prepared to incorporate
research and their skills into evidence-based
    practice
  • Sets higher standards for the nursing profession

8
Potential negative consequences of the dnp
9
Potential Negative Consequences
  • Undermine nursing as a scientific progress
  • Reduction in number of PhD prepared nurses
  • Lengthen course of study for future PhD graduates
  • Diverse curricular requirements
  • Confusion for the general public
  • Difference in doctors of the health care field
  • Devalue of the current advance practice programs
  • Worth of advanced practice nurses
  • Division between academia and clinical practice
  • DNP (practice) vs. PhD (research)

10
The opinion of a current MSN student
  • In my estimations, as I am currently 4 weeks away
from completing my MSN master of science in
nursing, with an emphasis on midwifery, a DNP is
an attempt of masters-prepared nurses to garnish
more political and financial power within the
healthcare arena. Although that is a noble goal,
it has not been demonstrated that it will improve
patient care. What it will do is increase the
length of time that it takes to obtain one's
advanced practice degree, as well as increase
substantially student debt load. In an era in
which we are trying to recruit more people of
color into our ranks, as well as nontraditional
students, this "vision" will push many people
away from advanced practice nursing. More
importantly, the DNP has not been demonstrated to
increase the professional salaries of those who
obtain it. So does another year, costing an
additional 20,000, sound palatable? Not to many
of us. It won't change the quality of care, nor
the salaries of those practicing. What it will do
is push many people away from the degree and add
another "title" within the many already existent.
"So you are a nurse Doctor??"
  • Kari Michalski, RN, BSN, SNMMinneapolis,
    Minnesota

DNP and Education
12
Questions To Ask
  • Universities and educators are asking questions
    regarding DNP
  • Who will teach this credential with lack of
professionals with an experienced DNP degree?
  • How will the push for DNP be embraced with
deficit in overall faculty within the nursing
    field?

13
Positives for DNP and Nursing Education
  • More doctoral prepared nursing available to
teach, helping the nurse and faculty shortage
  • DNP candidates can teach both BSN and MSN student
    clinical education

14
Negatives for DNP and Nursing Education
  • Resource realignment
  • Faculty repositioning
  • Reevaluating tenure track policies to accommodate
    DNPs on faculty
  • Might require increase amount of required
clinical background of faculty to be able to
    teach DNP
  • Effects linear continuum in advancing education

15
DNPs - Good for Education?
  • Needs work to accommodate
  • Will potentially produce more educators
  • Allow the opportunity to expand knowledge in
    clinical practice
  • More options in advanced education
  • Attract both BSN and MSN to clinical practice
    route

16
Is the DNP Beneficial for Nursing?
Which side of the fence do you stand on?
