Title: Scientology a look into the sides of Medicine

1
Scientology a look into the sides of Medicine
By Stephanie Crist and Bridget Taddonio
2
The Issue
Scientology is becoming a heated debate amongst
the AZ State Legislature.
  • Senate Bill 1477, the psychotropic drug bill
  • Church of Scientology who purposed the bill
    argues that mind altering drugs
  • such as Ritalin and Prozac must be tested before
given to a patient in hopes
  • of decreasing allergic reactions.
  • Non-supporters argue that the Church is slowly
    trying to implement their
  • religious beliefs on the citizens of Arizona.

3
What Is Scientology?
  • A religious movement based on a system of beliefs
that originated in 1952 by Author L. Ron Hubbard.
  • Made popular in todays society by celebrities
such as, Tom Cruise, Kristy Ally, and John
    Travolta.

4
Basic Beliefs
  • Peoples spiritual being has lived through many
past lives and will continue to live beyond the
    death of the body (reincarnation).
  • A person is basically good, but becomes
  • contaminated by false emotions in moments of pain
    and unconsciousness in his life.

5
So
  • In relation to our topic, Scientologists believe
that mind altering drugs only mask a problem that
doesnt, in their minds, actually exist.

6
Supporters of the Bill
  • Supporters for Bill 1477 believe the bill is
necessary because people should be informed of
the side effects of medication before it is
    prescribed to them.

7
Why should patients know about psychiatric drugs
effects?
  • Because.
  • Certain psychiatric drugs such as ADHD caused
25 people to die suddenly between 1999-2003.
  • Also 54 people suffered serious cardiac
events such as a stroke, heart attack,
hypertension or arrhythmia, while taking the
medications. Nineteen of the deaths were among
children and teenagers according to Los Angelus
    Times.

8
Opposers of the Bill
  • Reasons for Opposition
  • Could possibly suppress the growth and evolution
    of new medications.
  • Why should people who dont believe mental
illness even exists have a say in the
prescriptions of these medications for others?
  • Celebrities, Glitz and Glamour.

9
Is there a real problem here?
  • According to familydoctor.org these psychiatric
drugs have a low percentage of side effects when
they are used properly by the patients.
  • Therefore
  • Should we be spending tax dollars on a problem
that isnt exactly a real threat?

Is there a real problem here?
10
Concluding
  • Bill 1477 of the Arizona State Legislature has
both positive as well as negative aspects. Some
believe that testing of psychiatric medications
is essential for the health and well being of all
patients, while others argue that this is a
    matter of religious promotion.

11
Solution
  • In order to solve this dilemma, we believe that
the choice of receiving psychiatric drug testing
should be left up to the patient, or parental
discretion. This will eliminate the underlying
issue of possible religious promotion, as well as
benefit the health of many Arizonan citizens.
