Given is a post-16 learner taking the Advanced
Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies. He is
fascinated with the world of fashion and spends
every spare penny on clothes. He is resourceful
and personable, and his ambition is to own and
manage a hair or beauty business by the time he
is thirty, as he is fascinated with the
innovative aspects and liveliness of the
industry. However he has recognised that the
opportunities are vast and he wants to take the
Advanced Diploma to discover his niche within the
sector. He achieved excellent GCSE results and
decided the Diploma was the way he wanted to set
about achieving his ambitions. His choice of ASL
was English language and literature. It was his
favourite subject at GCSE and he wants to develop
his communication skills as well as his knowledge
in management skills within the hair and beauty
sector.

shows.
Given spent a week in a small hairdressing salon
in a residential area. The clientele were mainly
elderly and Given felt this was not his sort of
hairdressing. He much preferred his second week
which was at a smart city-centre salon. However,
the highlight of his work experience, which he
managed to arrange himself through his own
contacts in the industry was two days assisting a
stylist behind
Given explored the use of images and language in
fashion and cosmetics advertising. First he
researched the principles used by marketing
companies when using images and adapting language
to target specific customer groups. Then, in
collaboration with his colleges training salon,
he devised a range of advertising flyers, each
targeting a different type of customer. He
interviewed potential customers from each of the
target groups to assess how successfully the
flyers would attract them to the colleges
training salon. He amended the flyers in the
light of the feedback he received and then tested
out his revised versions on new potential
customers. He presented his findings in the form
of a report and evaluated how successful he had
been in his choice of images and language.
