Introduction
  • The Assiniboine zoo is the second largest animal
    collection in Canada.
  • It has over 1 600 different kinds of animals
  • Over 240 different kinds of species
  • A major attraction here in Winnipeg
  • The zoo covers 45 hectares of riparian forest
    along the bank of the Assiniboine River
  • It was established in 1904
  • The zoo specializes in animals from cooler
    climates of the world
  • The zoo has a long record of displaying and
    breeding rare and endangered species
  • In the last decade, 473 000 people have visited
    the zoo
  • The Assiniboine Zoo is the oldest zoo in Canada,
    which makes it an important place in both
    Manitoba and Canada

  • There are outdoor and indoor facilities,
    depending on the season
  • Countless peacocks wonder wherever they please
  • Several waterfowl ponds are home to a variety of
    native and exotic species
  • Animals are kept in a variety of environments,
    they are beautifully landscaped enclosures

Animals
  • The zoo has numerous exotic animals and tropical
    species
  • The zoo has four species of bears
  • Some birds include the black necked swan, cape
    barren goose and Hawaiian goose
  • There are many rare and exotic species displayed
  • Most of the animals displayed are from the
    northern latitude and mountain ranges
  • Adjacent is an owl section with nine winter hardy
    species
  • The zoo has four species of bears polar,
    grizzly, American black and spectacled bears
  • There are wild cats displayed at the zoo, for
    example, Siberian tiger, and Irkustsk lynx
    represent Eurasian cats
  • The animals are housed in natural exhibits
  • Many of the animals can be seen outdoors
    throughout the year

Displays Exhibits
  • Down Under Display, displays Australian fauna
  • There is a pair of Matschies tree kangaroo
  • There are many parrots such as golah, lorikeets,
    and finches
  • There are also four additional Parma wallabies
    displayed
  • There is also an African fauna display
  • There are few traditional large animals kept, due
    to the long winter confinement and high
    maintenance costs for heated quarters
  • There are seven lemurs maintained
  • The seven types are ring tailed, black, red
    fronted, mongoose, black and white, red ruffed
    and brown. All of the latter species have
    produced offspring
  • Some African animals displayed are Chapmans
    zebra, brown hyena, Cape hyrax, marabou stork,
    African crowned crane, Abyssinian lovebird,
    cape-thick knee, numerous species of finches and
    African spotted lungfish

  • The zoo also has a neo tropical exhibit
  • There are 34 Caribbean flamingoes displayed
  • 22 compatible white fronted marmosets are
    displayed as well
  • There are 12 cotton tipped tamarins and groups of
    red-bellied tamarin
  • As well as a common squirrel monkey and bush dog

Tropical House
  • The tropical house provides warm weather viewing
    of tropical animals
  • It is home to monkeys, reptiles and free flying
    birds from tropical forests
  • Here, birds fly freely overhead
  • There are over 41 species of birds
  • There is also an American alligator
  • Red piranhas are also displayed
  • A two toed sloth and orange rumped agouti is also
    displayed
  • Five adult Aldabra tortoises have been displayed
    there for over a 26-year period

Kinsmen Discovery Center
  • The Kinsmen Discovery Center has a
    self-sufficient ecosystem where creatures no
    longer have to be fed by zookeepers
  • It has a large indoor and outdoor facility
    (including a barn)
  • It exhibits farm animals, reindeer, and llama
  • There are exhibits of short tailed fruit bat and
    six kinds of rat snakes
  • There are tortoises, lungfish, and a red tailed
    catfish
  • It is good for children because it has an
    interactive display and a petting zoo

  • 20 years and 7 months an alpine ibex
  • 17 years and 7 months an Afghanistan markhor

  • A gibbon made history with an eye operation
    (November 05, 1983)
  • A blind ape underwent cataract surgery (October
    18, 1983)
  • A brave hare arrived at the zoo after surgery on
    a frozen foot (February 25, 1984)
  • The zoo experienced the death of the worlds
    oldest pronghorn (November 16, 2000)

    extinction
  • It is one major and incredible attraction of
    Winnipeg
  • This gives the animals a chance to live on earth
    longer
