What is the structure?
5
Balance refers to a way of combining elements to
add a feeling of equilibrium or stability in a
work of art.
6
There are fourtypes of balance in art
  • Symmetrical or formal
  • Approximate symmetry
  • Asymmetrical or informal
  • Radial

7
Symmetrical or formal balance
  • One side is exactly the same as the other side or
the two halves of a work of art are mirror images
    of each other.
  • .

8
Approximate symmetry
  • This is when the work of art is almost
    symmetrical but not quite.

9
Asymmetrical or informal
  • This type of balance takes into account such
qualities as hue, intensity, and value, in
    addition to size and shape.

10
Radial
  • Radial balance occurs when objects are
    positioned around a central point.

11
How is the work balanced?
  • Look at each of the following works of art and
    decide how they are balanced.
  • Mark the balance worksheet with your answer
