2

September 11th, 2001
War in Iraq March 20, 2003
War in Afghanistan October 7, 2001
3
What are some of the major features of a
timeline?
4
Why dont timelines look like this?
2003- Jennifer Granholm becomes Michigans first
female governor

1274- Thomas Aquinas is born in Italy
1969- New York Jets win Super Bowl III
5
What can a timeline do?
  • A timeline is a tool of selection and emphasis.
  • Organize events in a chronological order.
  • Make connections between related events, and
    filter out unrelated events.
  • Show cause and effect relationships.
  • Identify important sections of history, like the
    years 1939-1945.

6
How do we use a timeline?
  • We look for what it selects and what it
    emphasizes.
  • We create them to show the relationships between
    events we think our important.

September 11th, 2001
War in Iraq March 20, 2003
War in Afghanistan October 7, 2001
7
Lets practice making our own timelines.
  • Using what you already know about the events,
make a timeline of the Great Depression.
  • Your timeline should show the events that caused
the economy to collapse and the effects this
    collapse had on Americans.
  • The events should be as close to the correct
chronological order as you can make them.

8
Start with something like this
U.S. Economy Collapses
Effects
Causes
9
Keep in mind
  • Professional historians, to this day, cannot
agree on the exact causes of the Depression.
  • No theory is wrong so long as it is based on the
    facts you know.
  • Whats most important is that your timeline
clearly reflects your thoughts about the great
    depression

10
If you need any help ask Joel or Marion
  • Youll have about 10 minutes to make your
    timeline.
  • If you want to compare your work with another
students once youve finished you may.

11
What events did you include? What order did you
put them in?
12
As we watch the video today, keep track of what
events the video mentions. Compare that to what
you included on your timelines.
13
Why doesnt this timeline work? What does it not
do that a timeline should do?
