THE TALONBrown County High SchoolDivision
I Judges CommentHonestly, The Talon confuses
me. The look is so professional, the topics are
traditional and timely, and the editorial shows
leadership. What concerns me is the lack of
interviewing. The staff needs to get out of the
room and talk to people. Use information quotes
to help tell the story. Its tough but mandatory.
You are good, but could be greataward
winning. I hope you are able to make some of
these changes in the final issues. Good luck.

THE ORACLEColumbus East High SchoolDivision
II Judges CommentYou have an outstanding
newspaper with nice design and interesting
coverage and contents. I especially like your
Sports Makers wrap-ups. I also liked your Two
hundred words or less and Ever wonder?
features. Nice section of news briefs. Keep doing
these. Some friendly suggestions for
improvement 1. Eliminate passive voice 2.
Include some personality profile type feature
stories 3. Make your staff editorial more
prominent and dont byline it 4. Use shorter
paragraphs (especially leads) everywhere 5.
Add your advisors name to your staff box. He
deserves the recognition.

QUAKER SHAKERPlainfield High SchoolDivision
II Judges CommentYour greatest strength is
also your greatest risk. Your graphics are
excellent, but they are so varied that they are
overpowering. You risk drawing attention to the
design itself and away from the content. In some
cases, more may mean less. In other words, by
holding back the design a little, youll better
inform the reader.

CUB REPORTERLawrence Central High

the school as thoroughly as any paper Ive seen
in a while. There is something in there for
nearly any student. Steer clear of leading
stories with a date. Keep the focus on news. Put
the date in the second paragraph.

II Judges CommentsYou have a fine looking
publication. I liked your nameplate. Good job
with an unsigned staff editorial in each issue.
You had lots of good reviews. Nice sports wrap-up
sidebar. Some suggestions for improvement
include 1. A news brief section. 2. More
personality profiles of students instead of
faculty/ staff. 3. More interviewing and
reporting resulting in more quoted material in
all stories. 4. Avoid transforming headlines.
5. No passive voice in subs. 6. No reporter
opinion. 7. Sharper and tighter cropped
photos 8. More serious and controversial
personal columnsand get rid of the crossword
puzzle. Good luck with rewarding 2005 issues.

II Judges CommentsMost of my comments are on
the pages of your publication. Staff does a good
job. Lots of thought in the planning, writing and
layout pages. Some areas of concern-but just a
few. You have a nice looking news magazine. Staff
seems committed and goes beyond the
expected. Keep growing. When I use a lot of red
on the pages, its because I see good things that
can be made even better!

III Judges CommentsI have just opened up your
three issues and cannot wait to read them. Your
design is so effective! Now that you have the
readers attention (which is a very difficult
takes to master, and you excel in it!), develop
your writing in order to keep the readers
attention. Use a more narrative approach to story
telling. Lead your reader through the stories. A
focus on these areas of improvement will move you
up to the next level. It should be a fun process
since your basis is so strong. My best to you!

TOM TOMDanville Community High SchoolDivision
I Judges CommentsTom Tom 2004 displays an
absolutely impressive, attention-to-detail,
professional-looking package of the Danville High
School student experience in 2003-04. The theme,
danville is, you are, ties the books multiple
sections together visually as well as in prose
and gives the reader a real sense of the
excitement of this year as well as an anchor for
the massive, contemporary coverage throughout.
The short-page divider inserts provide an
additional glimpse of that excitement through
student-noted details from the section coverage
and augments a notably exceptional job of
including as many students as possible in the
coverage of this book.As the critique judge
pointed out, this staff obviously understood how
to create an exciting and photo-journalistic
yearbook the overall impact created by the
clean, notably contemporary designs, fact-filled
copy and fun graphics make a gaze through the
book especially exciting. To say this book is
superior is an understatement. Strengths
throughout include quote/photo units,
infographics, emphasis on candid photos, depth
coverage, lots of direct quotes, the design
packaging, impressive dominant photos, use of
screens and thin tooling lines, cut-outs, feature
and secondary headlinesthis list could go on and
on.The staffers and adviser of this particular
yearbook should be especially proud of their
product. Not only does it serve its readers with
a superior snapshot of their student experience,
but also provides a model of everything a
scholastic yearbook can be. Congratulations to
everyone involved in the production of the 2004

packages and Paw Prints 2004 illustrates it well.
This 136-page package presents the LaCrosse High
School 2003-04 experience in superior style,
beginning with the theme display on the cover as
well as clean, beautiful design throughout,
strong action photos, quote-filled copy and neat

and small-town feel of the LaCrosse area and ties
the book together well in both graphics and
prose. This book is well organized and easy to
follow each section is completeincluding clubs,
which often is weak in other books. Your attempt
to include all students in this volume is evident
and commendable. Design techniques are consistent
throughout with strong graphics that enhance the

the eye into the coverage. Spot color works
especially well in the album section, enhancing
multiple student quotes about relevant,
student-focused issues of the times. Direct

student participants and give the information
real credibility. Strong action photos give this
books coverage a superior edge. Expressive

typography that displays the outstanding stories
in a truly pleasing fashion.
Furthermore, infographics, student quote
features, impressive depth captions, subtle

PARAGONMunster High SchoolDivision III Judges
CommentsParagon 2004 is an absolutely impressive
package of no ifs, ands or buts about Munster
High 2003-04, again utilizing the color red in a
pleasing fashion. Of special notation throughout
is the clean, professional-looking design
incorporating outstanding, truly high-quality
black and white photography cropped almost to
perfection and nearly defining what capturing
action means, copy that has been deeply
researched, reflects multiple sources and
appropriate student quotes, as well as depth
captions that set the standard for making spread
coverage complete. The theme copy is filled with
relevant details that reflect facts from the year
and provide a visual, quick read of this story,
this year. Typography incorporates multiple
fonts to present an incredible professional-lookin
g package augmented by subtle graphics
that provide visual consistency and carry the
theme message throughout. Such care has been
taken in the planning and production of this book
that attention to details is an understatement.
Group shots may be the most accurately cropped
and presented package elements of any yearbook in
the country, and sports stats with student quotes
and their photos provide a truly pleasing display
of the historical notations of their respective
seasons. Senior stats with their photos give the
information a relevancy lost when placed
elsewhere or not included. Additionally,
faculty/staff assignment notations with their
photos give the coverage a sense of
completeness. Once again, the Paragon staff has
proved that high school journalists can produce
some the most outstanding publications the eye
could see. This 222 pages of coverage also
reiterates the notion that black and white
photography can be some of the best journalism
despite the worlds love affair with four-color.
This book is nothing short of exceptional and
everyone at Munster High School should be
especially proud of it. Congratulations to
everyone involved in its production.
