• Federalists attack each other Hamilton v Adams.
  Ex. John Adamss Jackasses (aka the US Navy)
• Jefferson elected with some contest in 1800.
  Aaron Burr was his Vice Pres.
• Adams was the last Federalist President even
  though many held posts in the government few
  die, none resign. Anti-Federalists quote.
• The Sedition Act died before Jefferson took
  office and the reversed the Alien Act with the
  naturalization law of 1802.

• 16 new federal judgeships Midnight Judges
• Packed lifetime posts with Anti-Jeffersonians
• New Republican Congress repealed the Judiciary
  Act of 1801.
• John Marshall 30 days under Federalist
  administration and 34 years under other
  administrations.
• Marbury lost his job and decided to sue on the
  grounds that the act was unconstitutional.

• Created Judicial Review Supreme Court had the
  final say in cases of Constitutionality

• Goal to reduce standing army and entangling
  alliances.
• Tripolitan War 1801-1805 Paying off pirates of
  North Africa to save American vessels and lives.
• France and Napoleon take lands west of the
  Mississippi from Spain and close New Orleans
  trade for the US.
• Monroe met Livingston in France to discuss.
• Napoleon lost Santo Domingo Western not needed
• Louisiana Purchase - 15 million
  Unconstitutional, but no one minded double the US
  for three cents an acre.
• 1804 reelection time! Yeah Jefferson!

• Lewis and Clark do their thing 1804 1806
• Sacagawea and her French husband help the group.
  Collect data through journals.
• Aaron Burr and his falling out of grace.
• Dropped from Jefferson in second term.
• Joined Federalist Faction Hamilton foiled the
  conspiracy. A duel! Hamilton died.
• Burr is arrested for treason acquitted and fled
  to Europe.

• Jefferson reelected in 1804.
• London issues the Orders of Council British
  ships closing all the ports to France.
• Napoleon issued the seizure of all merchant
  vessels entering British ports.
• Impressments 6,000 between 1801-11.
• Chesapeake A British vessel invaded an American
  vessel and demanding deserters. The US refused,
  the British fired, Jefferson responds

Why?

• Embargo Act of 1807
• US voluntarily cut off exports with the idea that
  Britain and France would give in.
• Economic downturn
• Surpluses of cotton, tobacco, grain.
• Dambargo
• Congress repealed it in 1809, and replaced it
  with the Non-Intercourse Act.
• Madison elected in 1808.

• Congress accepts Macons Bill No. 2.
• Gave commercial rights to either nation which
  removed their trade restrictions first.
• France removed their restrictions first, Britain
  did nothing. US opened trade with France.
• Western War Hawks fought with British backed
  Natives on American soil.
• Tecumesh and Teskwatawa Battle of Tippecanoe in
  1811 with William Henry Harrison
• Eastern War Hawks wanted to fight the British
  and their Orders of Council.
• Congress declared war on June 15, 1812.
