Title: Knowledge Dissemination and Use KDU Subgroup Progress Report

1
Knowledge Dissemination and Use (KDU) Subgroup
Progress Report
  • Presentation to the Transformation Workgroup
  • May 9, 2006

2
Knowledge Dissemination Subgroup
  • Charter of KDU subgroup Development of
improved strategies to shorten the time span
    between when scientific and treatment/support
advances are known, and when these advances are
    practiced.

General Updates
  • Our subgroup has met twice, 1/18 and 2/14. Some
members have participated by conference telephone
due to travel commitments and/or tight schedules.
  • Six individuals, including subgroup members
represented Indiana at a Regional Science to
Service Meeting in Oklahoma City on April 17 and
    18th.

5
General Updates
  • discussion of the charter, seeking grounding and
alignment on the task and definition of the
    product
  • discussed the subgroup membership in order to
assess the degree to which a full complement of
expertise and knowledge was engaged to accomplish
    our task.
  • additional members were invited to join the
subgroup and the complete membership is reflected
    above.

6
General Updates
  • agreed that we would guard against re-inventing
the wheel and would make sure that all meaningful
    existent literature and current initiatives
focused on shortening the science to service
cycle would be assessed prior to moving forward.
  • agreed that our product would be a process that
would have built in accountability, measurement,
and funding with high probability of
    sustainability over time.
  • Education and skilling of pre- and in-service
providers will be core to the process
  • to complete the process, continuous learning and
quality improvement will have to be the new,
universal culture if sustainability is to be
    assured

7
KDU Background Reading
  • The subgroup members have accessed literature on
the topic of evidenced-based practices and the
science to service cycle dynamics and
implementation research. A listing of some of
    this material is the following

8
KDU Background Reading
  • The Indiana DMHA Transformation Grant proposal.
  • Turning Knowledge Into Practice (Fall 0 ACMHA
    and TAC)
  • Strategies for Disseminating Evidenced-Based
Practices to Staff Who Treat People with Serious
Mental Illness (12/01 APA, Corrigan, et al.)
  • Identifying and Implementing Evidenced-Based
Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services
    (9/16/05 SAMSHA)

9
KDU Background Reading
  • Policy Implications for Implementing
    Evidenced-Based Practices (12/01 Goldman, et
    al.)
  • Annapolis Coalition on Behavioral Health Work
Force Education report to the WICHE Commission on
    5/20/02.
  • Evidenced-Based Mental Health Practices (Lehman
    PORT study)
  • New Freedom Commission Subcommittee on
    Evidenced-Based Practices Background Paper.

10
Moving Forward
  • Oklahoma City group has recommended merging of
    KDU and Results Management Subgroups.
Recognizing the overlap between both groups goals
    and strategies, i.e. circular relationship/connect
ion between results and practice, and practice
    results back to science.

11
Moving Forward
  • Offer support and recommendations to the system
where results are not being seen due to lack of
    knowledge, competency and/or skill/education.
  • As efforts continue, relevant stakeholders and
knowledge experts will be incorporated into the
    subgroup

12
  • KDU meetings/minutes The minutes of the two
meetings have been prepared by Gina and are
    available on request.
