5000 SeriesReceiver Comparison
29
True vs. Space Diversity
  • Common
  • Both methods use two antennas
  • The active antenna is switched based on RF signal
    strength
  • When signal strength is high at both antennas, or
when signal strength is high at one antenna,
    operation is the same
  • Differences
  • Difference relates to switching behavior at the
outer limits of the operating range (signal
strength is very weak at both antennas)
  • Under this condition, the space diversity tuner
will switch rapidly between antennas (degrading
signal quality), while the true diversity tuner
will not switch until signal strength improves
    for at least one antenna.

30
True vs. Space Diversity
  • Space diversity
  • The tuner will switch from one antenna to the
other if the signal strength at the active
antenna drops below an established threshold.
  • If the signal strength at the other antenna is
also below the established threshold, then the
tuner will switch right back to the first antenna
  • It will keep switching back and forth
rapidly until the signal strength improves, at
which point it will stay with the most recently
selected antenna until that antenna's strength
    falls again below the threshold.

31
True vs. Space Diversity
  • True diversity
  • Two separate receivers (one per antenna)
  • The tuner will switch from one antenna to the
other IF the signal strength at the active
antenna drops below an established threshold AND
the other antenna is receiving with signal
    strength above the established threshold.
