• The Bald Cypress, growing in the swamps of our
  state, was designated as the state tree in 1963.
• The bald cypress got its name because it loses
  its leaves in the winter.
• Bald cypress trees growing in water sometimes
  have bumps in their roots called knees.

Louisiana State Doughnut

• The beignet (ben-YAY) became Louisianas state
  doughnut in 1986. A beignet is a square, puffy
  doughnut sprinkled with powdered sugar. It does
  not have a hole in the middle.
