The Capibara
  • The Capybara is also known as the carpincho, the
    water hog, the giant water guinea pig,and the
    chigwire.
  • Capybaras are the largest living rodent. They
    can weigh up to 160 lbs.
  • They are the only type of rodent that can be
    found in groups, called herds.
  • Their noses slightly resemble a horses, its
    legs are short with small feet that look like a
    mix between claws and hooves. They has small ears
    and is covered with short brown/yellowed hair.

  • They live in tall grasslands that border rivers,
    streams, and lakes in tropical South America
    Panama.
  • When happy,capibaras make clicking noises.
    They love to swim and have excellent swimming
    skills, and they are rarely found far from water.
    They leap into the water to protect themselves
    from any danger which is, for them, an excellent
    defense mechanism.
  • The average life spand of a capybara is 10 years,
    this is because of predators, such as jaguars,
    and natural death.

  • The spider monkeys brain is less complex then
    other
  • primates.
  • No opposable thumbs.
  • They are very slender with tails usually longer
    then
  • their bodies.
  • Their tails are usually used as an extra hand to
    help
  • them move from tree to tree.

  • They rarely come down to the ground from their
  • home in the upper canopies of the forests
  • Their usual diet includes fruit, nuts, and
    leaves.

  • There are two species of hog nosed viper, the
    Trimeresurus lansbergii which lives in the
    Pacific side of Panama, and the Trimeresurus
    nasutus which lives on the Atlantic side.
  • Hog nosed vipers live in the forest of Panama.
  • The small hog nosed vipers of Panama are
    poisonous although not very many bites have been
    reported.

  • They are brown or black with light red markings
    on their backs

  • The Hook-Billed Kite first appeared in the USA in

  • mid 1970s.
  • Males are gray above with a barred breast.
  • Females show a rufous collar, brownish back and
    are barred below as well.
  • The bird is entirely dark slate gray overall with
    a clean banded black and white tail.

Ariel is 12 years old . She will be going to
Santa Barbara Junior High. In her free time she
hangs out with friends,(mostly Julia McAdams).
