Crisis in Berlin
  • The problem Those wishing to escape the
    oppressive communist government in East Germany
    went to West Berlin and from there went to West
    Germany.
  • 20 of all Germans living in East Germany did
    this greatly weakening the economy of East
    Germany.
  • Khrushchev had to stop Germans from leaving the
    East to save the Communist government there.
  • Khrushchev threatened to blockade West Berlin
    like Stalin had done. Realizing that this could
    lead to war, what he did was build a Wall around
    West Berlin to keep East Germans from moving to
    West Germany.
