Title: Cheerleading

1
Cheerleading
  • Learning the basics

2
The definition of cheerleading
  • Cheerleading is recreational activity and
    sometimes competitive sport involving organized
routines including elements of dance and
    gymnastics to encourage sports teams

3
Types of Stunts
  • Liberty
  • Scorpion
  • Toe Touch
  • Heel Stretch
  • Arabesque

4
Liberty
  • A base holds up a flyer/flier with one of her
feet in both of the base's hands. The flier's
other leg is bent. There are also one armed
Liberties. The arms can be in a high V or one arm
in a high V and the other on your hip.

5
Scorpion
  • While in a Liberty you grab the toe of your bent
leg and bring it up to almost behind your head.

6
Toe Touch
  • A jump where your arms are in a "T" motion and
your legs split to the sides, toes pointed with
your knees up or pointed back. Hands do not touch
the toes, as the name implies, but instead your
hands try to reach to the insides of your ankles.
You should keep your back straight, your head up,
and rotate your hips to perfect this jump.

7
Heel Stretch
  • Same as a Liberty except your bent leg is held
    straight up with your hand.

8
Arabesque
  • One leg is down straight and the other is behind
you almost at a ninety degree angle to your back.

9
Safety Comes First!
  • Cheerleading can be a very dangerous activity
  • Just as many injuries can happen in cheerleading
    as a football game

10
Why do injuries occur?
  • Risk taking attitudes
  • Non-cushioned surfaces
  • Attempting difficult stunts before being ready
  • Lack of supervision

11
How do you prevent injuries?
  • Adhere to all rules and regulations
  • Practice on mats or pads
  • Practice proper spotting
  • Always have supervision
  • Gradually progress to difficult stunts and skills
  • Require and use the proper techniques
