- Our school St.Patricks Community School was
named after Saint Patrick. - St.Patrick stands as a symbol of the Irish, the
special love God has for us and the beloved place
everyone has in Gods heart. - The Schools official opening was in 1982
- Our Children Are Our Future And We Are The
Stewards Of Their Trust Is our school slogan
3The Staff Members Of St Patricks
- In our school we have about over 42 staff
members. - We have about 22 classrooms in There is a
computer lab, a gymnasium, a French room, a shop,
a library and a forum where we hold special
events. - Our school goes from kindergarten to grade nine.
- We are the only school in Red Deer that is a year
round school. We go to school from the beginning
of August until the end of June. We have a 2 week
October break, 3 weeks at Christmas and 2 weeks
at Easter.
4School Classes
- In St.Patricks Community School we have 465
students! - We have four programs Elementary, Middle School,
English As A Second Language (ESL), and Turning
Points (TP). - Elementary includes grades Kindergarten to grade
5. - Middle School is grade 6 to grade 9.
- ESL is for students that come from different
countries that dont speak English, ECS to grade
9. - TP includes four classes of up to nine students,
gr. 2 9, who have special learning and
behavioral needs.
5STUDENT COUNCIL
- The student council is made up of students in gr.
6 9. The council plans most of the student
activities during and after school. The student
council members include the president, a
publicist, a secretary, and two representatives
from each class, gr. 6 -9. - Laura and Martin are our class reps. The class
reps represent the class and take the wishes of
the majority of the class to the meetings.

6SPECIAL SUBJECTS
- Exploratory
- The grade 6s and 7s are divided into 4 different
- class groups each quarter term. The grade 8s and
9s - are also divided into 4 different class groups.
- Each group of 6/7 rotates through one of the
- following topics during a quarter term
- leadership
- organization skills
- etiquette
- seven habits of highly effective people.
- Each group of grade 8/9 rotates through four
- different studies.
7SPECIAL SUBJECTS
- Advanced Math
- This is an independent study for grade 6-9
students who - are very strong in math. Students complete the
- program on the computer through our links to our
district - Cyber school.
- Challenge
- This is a program for students from grade 4 and
up who - are very strong students and are gifted in one or
more - areas. They meet once a week to do special
projects that - challenge them.
8OPTIONS
- In grade 7-9 students can choose some of the
subjects they - take. These are called Options. Students choose
from - French
- All grade 3 - 6 students take French but in
grade 7 9, French becomes - an option. Every second year the 8/9 French
students travel to Quebec - for a week to practice their French and learn
more about the French - culture in Canada.
- Band
- While all students in grades 5 6 take band,
band becomes an option - for gr. 7 9 students. Students get to choose
the instrument they want - to play. We have the Big Band which is made up
of grade 6 9 - students. This band plays at special events and
goes to Band Camp for - three days every January.

- This is a sports and games oriented course.
- Foods
- Students learn how to cook yummy things such as
- Shop
- Students use machines to build with wood.
- Drama/Art
- Students put on plays.
10English as a Second Language
- ESL students are students who have come from
different countries to live in Canada. They come
from Colombia, Philippines, China, Nigeria,
Egypt, Sudan and Guyana. - The students learn to speak English, understand
English expressions and to spell. - There are over 50 ESL students in our school. The
teachers involved in ESL are Mrs. Wotherspoon and
Mrs.Mills. They help us learn English and explain
it to us so we can understand.

14CLUBS
- Peace and Justice is a group of students who meet
once a week to work together to raise money for
poor countries. This group sent over 100
Christmas boxes filled with presents for needy
children in other countries. They are now
practicing a play about baby Jesus and Santa
Clause. - The Ski Club goes skiing three times a month.
They have an instructor who teaches them to snow
board and to ski. The club raises money to go on
their ski trips.

16Special Programs
- DARE
- It stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. It
helps kids to resist drugs and violence. - It is taught by a police officer in grade five.
- There is a DARE grad at the end with t-shirts and
other prizes. The DARE program started in 1993. - Go Girls
- This is a program for girls to help keep in
shape, to encourage sports and to meet new
friends from other schools. - It is a program for girls only in grade five.
- It started last year, in 2003.
- Some of the activities are football, wall
climbing and cheerleading.
17Celtic Teams
- Our middle school has a very active sports
program. - We have junior and senior teams in volleyball and
basketball. - We also are competitive in badminton and track
and field.

- The try-outs were held before Christmas.
- We have a girls and boys senior team and a
- girls and boys junior team. Games start
- after Christmas.
19City of Red Deer
- In Red Deer we have some neat places, statues and
teams. In the next slides we will show you them.
20Red Deer's Facilities
- In Red Deer we have five main facilities.
- Bower Ponds is a recreation center in summer and
a snow ball fight waiting to happen in winter.
You can go on paddle boats on the pond in summer. - 2. Canyon Ski Area is a ski hill in Red Deer. It
is pretty cheap to go and ski or snowboard. -

21 Red Deers Facilities
- 3.The Centrum is a place where our hockey team
plays. It is connected to the Westerner where we
have our fair. - 4. Colicutt Center is a recreation area in Red
Deer where you can play hockey, lacrosse, rugby
and swim in the wave pool. - 5. Kerry Wood Nature Center is a place where
animals can live and people can watch them eat
and sleep in a natural environment.

22Red Deer Rebels
- The Red Deer Rebels hockey team won the Memorial
Cup in 2000/01. - They are the only major hockey team in Red Deer.
- They are placed fourth in the central division.

23Ghost statues
- In Red Deer, we have lots of bronze statues. They
represent - important places, people and animals. Here are
some of them. -
- Fire Wagon
- In front of the public library there is a life
size statue of an old - Fire Wagon being pulled by horses. The public
library used to - be the old fire house. The city changed it to the
public library. - The statue is there to remind people that the
library used to be - the fire house.
24- Francis the Pig
- Francis was the pig that ran away from the
pig slaughter plant. Men tried to catch her, but
she was too quick for them. She survived the
winter living in a bush and died when a bullet
shot her. - Mickey the Beaver
- He was found by Doris Forbes and her family
saved him. He was a hit in Red Deer and everybody
wanted to see him from all over the world. Mickey
became known throughout the world.
