  • Win an Interview

  • To help clarify your direction, qualifications,
    and strengths
  • It is NOT a personal statement or some sort of
    self expression.

  • Objective Statement
  • Work Experience
  • Education / Training
  • Relevant Clubs or Organizations
  • Hobbies Interests (If necessary)
  • References

Objective Statement
  • The objective statement states your career
    direction. The more specific the better.
  • Examples
  • Seeking an entry level position in retail sales
  • Seeking an entry level position in the
    hospitality industry where a background in
    advertising would be needed
  • Full-time position with a nonprofit organization
    where a background in business would be necessary

Work Experience
  • List jobs in reverse chronological order
  • Provide more specific detail to your more recent
    jobs
  • Make yourself sound impressive WITHOUT LYING
  • List at least three duties for each job
  • Use action words for describing duties
  • You can use experiences that you did not receive
    compensation

Education
  • List education in reverse chronological order
  • Degrees or Licenses first, then certificates and
    advanced training
  • List any education that you are currently
    pursuing
  • Only mention GPA if it is 3.2 and above
  • List any honors or educational awards you have
    received

Clubs and Organizations
  • Include any Professional Affiliation (Example
    Interact)
  • Include any leadership roles
  • Include any Community Organizations
  • Example Habitat for Humanity
  • Dont mention court ordered community service
  • Again include leadership positions

Hobbies Interests
  • Should be related to objective statement
  • Someone interested in construction management
    might mention woodworking
  • Someone interested in public relations might
    mention an interest in photography
  • Be Careful
  • Personal interests that a irrelevant to career
    goals can be turn-offs for interviews

  • In italics and centered at the bottom of the
    resume
  • You will develop a separate reference sheet for
    interviews

  • The resume should be one full page
  • Dont lie
  • Expect to discuss everything listed on the resume
  • This is an advertisement for you ability to meet
    the needs of a company
  • Keep it professional
