PSS Mission

• Presbyterian Senior Services is a
  non-profit citywide agency in NYC founded in
  1962, whose mission is to provide support
  services to older adults, with a special focus on
  the needs of poor and frail persons. PSS sponsors
  six senior centers in the Bronx and Manhattan
  funded by the New York City Department for the
  Aging, a Caregivers Support Program for
  Caregivers caring for the frail, ill and disabled
  and a Grandparent Program for grandparents
  raising grandchildren.
• Through these services and programs, PSS
  continues to fulfill its mission in meeting the
  needs of seniors, caregivers and their loved
  ones.

The PSS GrandParent Family Apartments

• Presbyterian Senior Services GrandParent Family
• Apartments is a newly constructed building in the
  South
• Bronx. It provides fifty apartments of
  supportive
• housing for older adults raising children. (For
  example,
• grandparents and grandchildren, aunts or uncles
  and
• biological great-nieces and nephews, cousins).
  The
• building provides 40 two-bedroom apartments and
  10
• three-bedroom apartments, On-Site Social Services
  and
• Enrichment Youth Programs for tenants and the
  outside
• community.

Our History

• The PSS GrandParent Family Apartments evolved
  from the vision of
• our Executive Director, David S. Taylor of
  Presbyterian Senior
• Services ten years ago. He was moved after
  hearing a story about a
• senior (a member at one of our senior centers)
  raising her four
• grandchildren. The sixty-five year old woman was
  not prepared for
• this new caregiving role and her biggest concern
  was not for herself,
• but for her grandchildren. This became one of
  many stories at the
• senior center.
• With these families in mind, the first PSS
  grandparent raising
• grandchildren support group was founded in 1995
  to help families
• remain stable and cope with their new life
  situations.
• Today, our program has expanded and has now
  relocated to our new
• PSS GrandParent Family Apartments building
  creating a one stop
• shop to housing, social services, support
  services, youth programs
• and entitlement assistance.

Who Will Take Care of Me?

• It is estimated that over 85,000 grandparents are
  rearing grandchildren in NYC.
• The PSS GrandParent Family Apartments
• works to create a more secure present and
• future for children whose parents are not able to
  
• care for them by providing comprehensive
• social services, education, youth programs and
• research.

Program Goals Purpose

• Provide Grandparent caregivers with the support
  they need in meeting their caregiving roles.
• Integrate health, education and social services
  by building bridges between systems, enhancing
  coordination, and breaking down barriers.
• Through respite, provide relief to overwhelmed
  caregivers.
• Enhance youth skills through educational
  assistance college preparation programs.
• Provide one on one homework assistance within a
  small group setting.
• Assist with grandparent / grandchild
  relationships breaking any communication
  barriers.

On Site Services Provided

• Within the residence, comprehensive on site
  social services and enrichment programs are
  available to the grandparent and grandchildren
  under one umbrella.
• Trained social workers, social work interns,
  educators and youth counselors provide services
  and programs catered to the needs of the
  grandparent as well as for the grandchild.

Who is Eligible?

• One adult in the household must be age 62 or
  older.
• All children in the household must be age 17 or
  younger at the time of admission.
• At the time of admission, the caregiver must have
  legally sanctioned care relationship with each
  child (for example legally adoptive parent,
  legal guardian, legal custodian or kinship foster
  caregiver)
• The natural birth parent of any minor cannot be a
  member of the household.
• Low income (50 below average monthly income).
• Rent Qualified tenants will pay 30 of their
  income to rent.
