- In 2004, 11.8 of Mississippi adults had ever had
asthma (244,198 persons). - In 2004, 7.1 of Mississippi adults reported that
they still had asthma (146,932 persons). - Source

- 96,835 (12.8) children 18 years old or under had
ever been told by a doctor or health professional
they had asthma. - Parents of 68,855 (9.1) children reported that

their child had had an episode of asthma or an

10State Asthma Plan
- Purpose Describes what needs to be done to
address asthma in Mississippi, provides an
organized way for communities to deliver asthma
programs, and will reduce duplication of efforts. - Process Utilized input from all regional
coalitions. Each coalition has selected
priorities for 2006 from overall plan. - Intent Asthma partners will implement specific
portions of the state plan because of their own
interest in asthma.
11Goals State Asthma Plan
- Reduce asthma hospitalization rates among
children and adults. - Decrease asthma disparities in all public health
districts/coalition regions. - Reduce burden of asthma on Mississippians.
- Increase healthcare provider and patient
education related to asthma.

- Encourage healthcare providers to use standard
patient-specific Asthma Action Plans. - Enhance community health education.
13What makes MississippisState Asthma Plan unique?
- The first of Mississippis chronic disease plans
to initiate planning at the local level. - The first state asthma plan in the U.S. to
address emergency preparedness related to
respiratory disease. - From the very beginning, asthma partners were
committed to providing specific resources to
further the work of the ACM.
14How to Join the ACM
- Complete the ACM Member Commitment Form.
- Review the Co-chair Responsibilities flyer and
consider becoming a Co-chair for your local
coalition. - Fax or mail your completed form as shown.
- Attend and participate in local coalition
meetings and activities.
15Are You or Your Organization already involved in
Asthma Activities?
- The ACM has put together an Asthma Activity
Resource Manual which lists activities/ programs
by county. - PLEASE use the form provided to tell us about
your asthma activities/programs. - Your activity/program will then be included in
the ACM Asthma Activity Resource Manual.
