Title: The Ideal Diet

1
The Ideal Diet
  • By Toi McGlothin

2
  • Structured weight loss programs can be more
beneficial than people that choose to diet on
    their own.
  • According to another study, does the Atkins work
    better than the other regimens.

3
  • The two studies were dedicated to obesity.
  • 30 of U.S. adults are now considered obese.
  • 34 U.S. adults are considered overweight.

4
The Study
  • Structured Weight Loss
  • A randomized clinical trial was done to
  • Compare the effectiveness of Weight Watchers to
people that use their own methods.
  • 65 men and 358 women ages 18-65 with a Body Mass
    Index(measures obesity) between 27 and 40.
  • Values greater than 30 usually indicate obesity.
  • Subjects received vouchers to attend Weight
    Watchers.
  • Self-Help
  • The subjects were given to sessions of counseling
about dieting and received popular information
    from books and Web sites.

5
Results
  • The weight watchers subjects maintained a
weight-loss of 9.5 to 11 pounds at the end of
the first year and their weight was lower than
baseline weight at the end of the second year.
  • The self-help subjects were able to lose and
maintain 2.9 to 3.1 pounds for the first year,
but their weight increased during the second
    year.

6
The Other Study
  • Researchers surveyed medical literature to see if
there was any evidence to support the
    effectiveness of low-carbohydrate diets.
  • The American Heart Association and the American
    Dietetic Association cautions against low
    carbohydrate diets.
  • They evaluated changes in weight, serum
    lipids(cholesterol), fasting serum glucose,
fasting serum insulin, and blood pressure.

7
Results
  • 663 people received lower- carbohydrate diets(60
    grams per day or less).
  • 71 people had the lowest- carbohydrate diets(
    20g/d or less)
  • No study evaluated diets of 60g/d or less than
    involved people 53 or older.
  • Low-carbohydrate diets does not have an adverse
effect on serum lipid, fasting serum glucose,
fasting serum insulin levels or blood pressure.

8
  • The research shows that there is an association
with a long diet duration and restricted calorie
intake, but not with reduced carbohydrate
    content, with obese people.

9
  • There is insufficient evidence that exists when
determining the effectiveness of low carbohydrate
diets, but a person can loose weight on this
diet, but should check with a physician before
    starting.
