Rhode Island was one of the most powerful
colonies to receive a lot of hurricanes. These
many storms tell a detailed history of Rhode
Island, as colonists and citizens learned to cope
with the resulting damages.

The Great Gale was one of the first hurricanes to
hit New England with a lot of power since 1635.
The winds were 135 miles per hour. This storm
came from the south side of Long Island
delivering a strong 11 ft. storm-surge that
funneled Narragansett Bay, destroying 500 houses
and 35 ships, and overflowing Providence, Rhode
Island with high waters. This hurricane took
place on September 1815.

Hurricane Carol was one of the most destructive
tropical cyclones to hit the east Atlantic States
since the hurricane of 1938. This hurricane took
place on August 31, 1954. It also killed 66
people. It injured several thousand people, and
it was one of the worst hurricanes to hit Rhode
Island.

The hurricane of 1938 killed 700 people 600 in
New England, it left 63,000 people homeless. It
destroyed 2 billion trees approximately. The
cost of all the destruction was 2.6 billion.

Hurricane Bob set a record of 24 hour
precipitation, with a total of 7.87 inches with a
wind gust to 125 miles per hour on Cape Cod,
Massachusetts. Heavy damage was reported in all
coastal New England towns. This hurricane took
place on August 19, 1991.

The people from back then didnt have satellites
or technology to tell when a hurricane was
coming. Today people use technology and
satellites to keep everyone safe, by warning
people when a hurricane is going to happen.
