Title: Ang Simbahan at Ang Estado
1Ang Simbahan at Ang Estado
2Module 1 The political, economic, and
socio-cultural situation of our country and its
state of democracy. Module 2 What does the
Church say? What are the principles to live by,
and responsibilities of a Christian citizen in
the social context. What can I do?
Governmentby its policies--directly affects
human dignity.
5Magkahiwalay at may kanya-kanyang limitasyon
Simbahan. Hindi mapaghihiwalay. Hindi
exclusive sa bawat isa.
6We see for example how our greatest moments of
CITIZENSHIP and NATIONALISM in this country were
also moments OF THE CHURCH -- EDSA I, EDSA II,
World Youth Day, etc. Our greatest moments as a
people, were also our greatest moments as
Christians and believers of God.
7The Church Social Teachings The churchs
response to the social events happening around
the world.
8- Prenotes
- Social Teachings coming from NATURAL LAW a
reflection on what it is to be human
(universality and the eternity of principles).
Therefore NOT just for Catholics. Therefore NOT
just for NOW.
9Prenotes 2) Norm/Standard How to live in the
context of a society. And how society should act
in the context of what it really means to be
human. 3) As MIRROR to the world this is what
the Church stands for AT ANY GIVEN TIME. 4)
Adidas Things may change. But the essentials
remain.
10The Social Teachings of the Church
God is the SOURCE of Authority
11We know this in theory we ascribe to the idea
that our Office is a CALLING. We hear politicians
talk about running for elections as a CALL.
Whether they are right or wrong, or motivated by
right or wrong motivations, we realize that there
is a sense (or at least they want to be perceived
as ascribing to this sense) of CALL.
12THE SOURCE of AUTHORITY is God. We see our
positions in our organizations as GIFT, as CALL
vocare. Voca (that which gives me voice). In
fact, to lose this sense of VOCATION is the
beginning of the end for most leaders.
13Social Teachings of the Church
We need AUTHORITY to have ORDER in Society.
14Obedience to civil authorities has as its basis
the responsibility of each person, and because it
is part of the order intended by God, it is an
act of reverence and homage to the Creator.
(Pacem in Terris 50)
15- Social Teachings of the Church
Political Authority is NOT absolute.
- It shouldnt go against
- Moral order and human rights
- The common good
- The legitimately constituted legal order (i.e.
the Constitutions)
16- We must especially bear in mind that when human
power commands something clearly opposed to these
three--that command is void (Immortale Dei 11).
In such a case, the just thing to do is not to
obey it (Libertas Praestantissimum 2l), for it is
an evident abuse of power.
17Why will the Church involve itself in Politics?
Because it is the Churchs responsibility to
safeguard human rights, the common good, and the
legal order. Pag hindi siya makikialam, hindi
niya ginagawa ang kanyang tungkulin bilang
Simbahan. If the Church will not involve itself,
then it ceases to be CHURCH.
18The Responsibilities of a Christian in Politics
(Mamamayang kristiyano at Kristiyanong mamamayan)
pulitika. Lalo na pag hindi natin nakikita ang
epekto ng ating ginagawa. Sa mga kabataan, lalo
na dahil bata pa tayo. (AMLC experience pag
wala tayong pananampalataya hindi tayo tatagal
pakapalan ng mukha na lang to faith of the
sower of the seeds)
19The Responsibilities of a Christian in Politics
(Mamamayang Kristiyano at Kristiyanong mamamayan)
Effects of Involvement 1) Brings not just
theoretical knowledge but participatory knowledge
2) Has a transforming effect makes us see the
world in a new light 3) Affects commitment and
behavior
20A Final Story The Alay ni Ignacio

dreamed of giving poor public highschool students
the opportunity to study in good schools like
Ateneo, La Salle, UST and UP. -
21A Final Story The Alay ni Ignacio
- They formed a group called ANI (Alay ni Ignacio).

- They then asked the Ateneo Administration to give
them classrooms during the summer. - They formed a summer school - complete with
PRINCIPAL, VICE-PRINCIPAL (of Academics, Student

offices were handled by students.
23A Final Story The Alay ni Ignacio
- To make the long story short, they became so
successful and they were so impressive that when
they made a proposal to FORD International, FORD
gave them 500,000. - All 5 students have graduated, but others have
taken up their dream and continue to do their
work. - They are now called PATHWAYS to HIGHER EDUCATION.
