Recovering from acid rain

• "Acid rain" describe the ways that acids fall out
  of the atmosphere
• Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx)
  are the primary causes of acid rain.
• (SO2) and NOx are regulated by EPA as part of
  the Clean Air Act of 1963

• Soils collected in the Adirondack Mountains of
  New York from 2003 to 2004
• 199 location from 44 lake watersheds plus 26 long
  term watershed monitoring

conclusions

• 75 1320 lake have drainage form watershed soil
  with low exchangeable calcium concentration less
  than 0.52 cmol/kg
• Cation exchange capacity (cmol kg-1)

• 1 meq/100 g soil 1 cmol/kg soil

• Base saturation less than 10.3 a meausre of the
  soils ability to neutralize acids
• Ph less than 4.5
• Based on data 1980 time soil acid-base chemistry
  has continued to deteriorate which will restrict
  the extent to which lakes will be able to recover
  in the future from acidification .
