- WHY Florida GED PLUS?
- Most GED students hope to attend college.
- The workplace increasingly requires higher levels
of education. - Many GED grads are under-prepared for further
education. - Excessive need for remedial classes can
discourage completion. - And the finance issue.

- WHY Florida GED PLUS?
- Most GED students hope to attend college.
- GEDTS reports that 65 of the adults who take the
GED Tests indicated a desire to continue their
education. - Studies show that 28-30 of all GED recipients
enroll in a two or four year college.

- WHY Florida GED PLUS?
- The workplace requires higher levels of
education. - Bureau of Labor statistics indicate
- 70 of the fastest-growing jobs will require
education beyond high school - 40 of all new jobs will require at least an
associates degree.

- Many incoming college students are
under-prepared, both traditional grads and GED
grads. - Only 7 of community college professors say that
most of their students come to college well
prepared. - High school graduates attain associates degrees
at almost twice the rate of GED recipients over
five years 54 versus 28.

- remedial or developmental education.

to be exempt from remedial and/or development

- How Was Florida GED PLUS Designed?
- FAU received initial funding through an Adult and
Family Literacy Act, State Leadership grant. - The Florida GED PLUS Advisory Council was
developed, consisting of representatives from - community colleges,
- school districts,
- workforce development, and
- corrections.
- A research and design team was identified to pull
all the elements together and develop all of the
materials for dissemination.

- Administrative challenges and concerns related to
implementation - Policies and procedures
- Subject areas that should be included and at what
level - Teacher training needs related to subject areas
as well as cognitive skill development - Teacher credentialing needs
