2 Rutgers CMSCE Summer Institute is a unique
opportunity for teachers and content providers to
work together to create a collaborative community
to enhance teaching and learning.
- Overview of Videoconferecing

- Introduction to collaboration tools
- Exploration of classroom resources that enhance
collaboration - Creation of a database of lessons and activities
3Content Provider Partners
- Middlesex County Cultural Commission

- Newark Museum
- New Jersey State Museum
4Why Focus on Videoconferencing?
- Allows teachers to bring in experts in all
subject areas to enhance their lessons - Schools can offer varied courses and content to
their students - Students can work with and learn from their peers
in distant locations, college professors,
museums, zoos - Equity of opportunity for all students
- Offers enrichment without cost of school bus, or
taking too much time from the rest of the school
day
5Ways You Use VC?
6Why Combine Videoconferencing with Collaboration?
- An electronic videoconferencing field trip is a
virtual visit to a site such as a museum or zoo
or a with a content expert or other classroom. - A collaboration extends this virtual visit to
sharing with the content provider or classroom to
create an end product. (examples can include
cookbook, poetry collection, ppt slide show,
quilt, newletter)
7Roadblocks to Collaboration
8 Videoconferencing Tools
- Room-sized equipment
- Point to point
- Multi-point (bridged)
- IP or ISDN
- Webcams attached to a computer
- Software
- Internet connection
9Which is betterroom-sized or desktop vc?
- Room-sized Videoconferencing
- Pros Generally higher quality video and audio.
Lends itself better to larger audience
participation. - Cons Too costly to have in each room. Need to
reserve room. Scheduling may be limiting.
Desktop Videoconferencing Pros Requires only a
classroom computer with Internet connection and a
webcam. Flexible scheduling. Easier to integrate
into lessons when it is in the classroom. Cons
Lower quality video and audio. Need a projector
and external speakers for class use. Audio echo
unless mic is muted.
