BC Medical System

• BC health insurance available to all residents of
  BC. Canadian citizens landed immigrants and
  convention refugees
• Covers medical services including Doctors fees
• Three month waiting period
• Monthly fee

Your BC Care Card

• A Care card is used when accessing any health
  care services in B.C, this includes hospitals,
  clinics, laboratory services, etc.
• Each card has a personal number, this number
  remains the same, regardless of any changes to
  personal status.
• You should carry your CareCard at all times, to
  have it available to be presented whenever you
  need health care services.
• A CareCard is also a valuable way to confirm your
  identity.
• A fee is not charged for a card issued when a
  person first enrolls with MSP.
• It is an offence to use another person's personal
  health number or to knowingly allow your personal
  health number to be used by another person.
• Those who are not residents of B.C. are not
  eligible for coverage.

Pharmacare

• PharmaCare subsidizes eligible prescription drugs
  and designated medical supplies, protecting
  British Columbians from high drug costs.
• To be eligible you must
• Be a BC resident for at least three months
• Be registered with the Medical Services Plan of
  BC.
• Be either a Canadian citizen or holder of
  permanent resident status
• Have filed a tax return for 2004 or be the
  dependent child of an eligible adult

B.C Healthy Kids - For children 19 and under.

• Dental - Children are eligible for 700 of basic
  dental services per calendar year. This coverage
  includes services such as exams, x-rays,
  fillings, cleanings and extractions. Dentists can
  advise families of other services that may be
  covered.
• Optical Children are eligible for prescription
  eyeglasses (lenses and basic frames) once in a
  twelve-month period. Childrens eye examinations
  are covered by MSP.
• Before any dental or optical services begin ,
  families need to show their childs BC CareCard
  to their dentist or eye specialist who will
  confirm the childs eligibility under the Healthy
  Kids Program.
• The Province pays dentists and eye specialists
  directly for the services children receive.
• Additional charges over and above what the
  Healthy Kids Program will cover are the
  responsibility of the family.

Finding a Dentist, Optometrist and Family Doctor

• Check with friends, immigrant settlement
  agencies,
• or the Yellow Pages to find a dentist,
  Optometrist or
• Doctors office. Call the office to make an
  appointment.
• MSP will not pay for regular dental/Optical
  services.
• If you have a job, your employer may have a
  plan that you can join.
• Some public health units have dental clinics.
  They give free dental checkups and cleanings to
  young children and low-cost dental care to older
  children and adults.
• To find out what services are available in your
  community, look in the Blue Pages of the
  telephone book under public or community health.
• Some hospitals have a list of doctors who are
  taking
• new patients.

Prescription Drugs

• You must have a doctors prescription (written
  permission) to buy prescription drugs (medicine)
  at a pharmacy (drugstore). The pharmacist will
  explain how often and how long you must take the
  medicine.
• You can buy some drugs without a prescription.
  These are called nonprescription drugs or
  "over-thecounter" drugs. These are usually for
  less serious problems, such as colds or
  allergies. If you have a question about
  over-the-counter drugs, ask your pharmacist.

Mental Health Services

• Sometimes immigrants have emotional problems.
  They may feel homesick, afraid, forgetful, or
  hopeless. If you feel upset, talk to your doctor,
  or a counsellor at an immigrant settlement
  agency.
• What if someone needs more help than this? There
  are Mental Health Centres in most B.C.
  communities. People at these centres can help. To
  find the mental health centre nearest you, look
  in the White Pages of the telephone book under
  "Mental Health Centres."

• BC NurseLine provides 24-hour, confidential
  health information and advice. Anywhere in the
  province, call BC NurseLine to speak to a
  registered nurse 24-hours or a pharmacist from 5
  p.m. to 9 a.m. every day.
• Specially trained nurses answer questions about
  health topics and procedures, identify symptoms,
  and help you decide when to see a health
  professional. Information and referrals are also
  provided to other services.
• Translation services are available in over 130
  languages. Please wait for the recorded
  disclaimer message for a nurse to answer your
  call - ask for translation services in the
  language that you prefer or speak
