5Louisiana Purchase 1803
- Napoleon Bonaparte of France persuaded Spain to
give back the LA area - Napoleon then sells this area to Jefferson
because he needs money to finance his war and his
hopes of an American Empire had diminished - Napoleon sells the Louisiana Purchase to the
United States for 15 million and this alone more
than doubled the size of the United States.

7Purchase of Florida 1819
- Spain was suffering serious internal problems and
their territories in the Americas was on the
verge of revolution. - Spanish foreign minister Onis signed a treaty
with Quincy Adams. - The United States would pay up to 5 million to
Spain's citizens and Florida would be ceded to
the United States. - The United States then ceded its claims to Texas
west of the Sabine River. - In addition, Spain ceded its claims to their
Oregon Territories.

9Annexation of Texas 1845
- The Mexican government wanted US settlement in
Texas to help out with the Native Americans. - They were offered Empresarios, land grants.
- Soon, the tensions mounted between the Texans and
the Mexican government. - The war for Texas independence lasted from
1835-1836 with a Texan victory. - The Treaty of Velasco granted independence for
Texas. - Sam Houston became the president of the Republic
of Texas in 1836. - President Polk favored the annexation of Texas as
a state to the US and it became the 28th state in
1845.

11Acquisition of the Oregon Territory 1846
- In 1818, Britain and US agreed to a joint
occupation of this territory. - The British settlers were fur traders and the
decline of fur trades prompted the British to do
something with the loss. - President Polk, Fifty-Four Forty or Fight,
determined to get this area he was willing to
wage war against Britain. - Britain didnt want to hurt relations with the US
and/or their trading partner. - They gave up their territorial claims to Oregon
and the boundary was set at the 49th parallel.

13Mexican Cession 1848
- Mexico wanted Texas back and the US wanted
California. They would go to war with one
another - The War with Mexico would last from 1845-1848.
Mexico was unwilling to give and so was true for
the US. - In 1848, Mexico finally surrendered because they
had suffered many causalities. - They signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
- Mexico agreed to the Rio Grande Border for Texas
and ceded New Mexico and California to the US. - The US agreed to pay 15 million for the Mexican
Cession which includes present day California,
Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, most of Arizona, and
parts of Colorado and Wyoming.

15Gadsden Purchase 1853
- Five years later, President Franklin Pierce would
authorize the Gadsden Purchase. - The US would pay 10 million for another piece of
land south of the Gila River. - This would also establish the current border of
the lower 48 states. - Color and label the piece below Arizona Grey.
