What is PCI?

PCI Vision
The Pre-College Initiative program was designed
to increase the level of consciousness of
African-American youth, encourage their
attendance of college, and their pursuit of both
studies and careers in Engineering, Science,
Technology, and Mathematics. The vision is to
establish PCI NSBE Jr. as an incubator for our
youth, where they can be nurtured and guided in
their academic careers.

PCI Mission
  • The NSBE PCI program will lead the world in
    enhancing the pre-college students Academic,
    Technical, and Leadership skills in order to
    maximize their opportunities in life.

Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Assess the state of PCI programming at your
    chapter
  • Set a direction for PCI for the year (with input
    from your fellow board members)
  • Coordinate all PCI activities of the chapter
  • Recruit members to serve as part of your
    committee
  • Ensure training of new leadership to carry on the
    vision
  • Compile a brief synopsis of yearly activities for
    transitioning the next PCI chairperson
  • Assist all executive board members as necessary

  • Development and support of NSBE Jr. members
  • Create a plan for program implementation for the

  • Ensure chapters are officially chartered
  • Keep database of students, tutors,

Understanding NSBE Jr.
  • Board Structure
  • -President
  • chief executive officer of the NSBE Jr. Chapter
  • chair all general and executive board meetings
  • in the interest of the membership, considered the
    designated spokesperson for the chapter
  • responsible for all chairpersons, educational
    programs, and coordination of all committee
  • responsible for reporting the monthly evaluation
    of chapter progress to the collegiate/alumni PCI

    executive board office with the approval of the
    Chapter Advisor
  • responsible for providing an annual budget each

    so the chapter can plan for the year
  • When a NSBE Jr. chapter is formed, use this

    far, and what steps will be taken to continue
    positive progress

  • Program Design
  • Expose pre-college students to core mathematics,
    applied science, and history of black inventors
  • Training workshops focus on ACT/SAT math
    preparation
  • Strengthen students appreciation of the math
    related sciences
  • Build students confidence in math skills
  • NOTE We are reaching out to grades 6-12
    students, mostly to the ones that need tutoring
    in math for test preparation.

  • To develop team mentality in pre-college students
  • To develop critical thinking and problem solving
    skills in the creation of prototype model of a
    potential technical innovation
  • To teach students how science, design,
    engineering, and math are interrelated

  • Year-Long Engineering Design
  • Teams of 6 members with an advisor formulate a
    solution to an assigned engineering problem with
    the materials provided
  • The problem is issued on in late August
  • Teams propose a solution to the problem to
    receive materials to build technical innovation
  • Showcase of designs at FRC
  • Winners in the FRC competition receive support to
    attend National Convention and compete on behalf
    of their region
  • More advanced problem statement assigned building
    off FRC design

  • SUMMER ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE FOR KIDS
  • three week day camp for students in grades 3-5
  • student attendees complete a hands-on project a
    week, then compete against other teams
  • NSBE, Jr. Collegiate Members serve as Mentors
  • co-sponsored with Society of Automotive Engineers

    available in college among Black communities.

Summer Camping Conference
  • Program Design
  • To introduce pre-college students to careers in
    engineering and technology through a series of
    workshops and hands-on activities
  • To introduce PCI competitions early
  • To increase NSBE Jr. member numbers
  • Review of 2008 Summer Camping Conference

National Programs Fund
  • The National Programs Fund (NPF) provides
    programming grants to NSBE Jr., Collegiate, and
    Alumni chapters intending to implement programs
    that fulfill the NSBE Vision or directly impact
    the National Long Range Plan, National Directives
    or national programming objectives
  • Chapters that are requesting grant funding must
    meet each of the guideline requirements outlined
    in the NPF packet
  • Submission of grant proposals does not guarantee
    approval for grant funding. 
  • NPF only provides partial funding for any grant
    proposed program
  • Chapters should not depend on the fund to provide
    100 funding for programs conducted at the
    chapter level.
