  • Money

5
BURGLARY FROM A MOTOR VEHICLE
Breaking into a motor vehicle to steal property
is a common theft on campus especially due to the
fact that we have a large number of commuter
students.
For the same time period, August 1, 2001 through
May 4, 2002, there was a total of 82 burglary
from motor vehicles reported to the SIUE Police.
Items at the most risk are
SIUE Parking Hang Tags
Car Stereo Systems
CD Players and CDs
Radar Detectors
Mobile Phones

VANDALISM
Vandalism is defined as a willful or malicious
destruction or defacement of public or private
property.
Some offenses of vandalism would include spray
painting on buildings, signs, etc., slashing
tires, damaging coin operated machines,
defacement/damage to cars or property.
From August 1, 2001 through May 4, 2002, there
were 68 incidents of vandalism reported to the
SIUE Police.

Fraud, Forgery, and Credit Card Fraud
ILCS 720 5/17 Deceptive Practice to act with
the intent to defraud, means to willfully and
with the specific intent to cheat or deceive, for
the purpose of financial loss to another or to
bring some financial gain to oneself.

ASSAULTS
Physical assault -- one person inflicting bodily
injury on another -- is the least frequent of
common campus crimes.
Statistics on sexual assault, including rape and
acquaintance rape, are hard to interpret because
these crimes go largely unreported. This may
suggest sexual assault is more frequent than
police reports show.

From August 1, 2001 through May 4, 2002, there
were 26 Battery/Assault incidents reported and 3
Criminal Sexual Assault incidents reported to
SIUE Police.

SERVICES AVAILABLE TO PROTECT YOURSELF
OPERATION IDENTIFICATION
Operation Identification is a theft prevention
program that involves marking personal property
with an identification number and displaying a
warning sticker to alert thieves that all
valuables in the residence are marked for
identification purposes.
Operation ID is convenient for SIUE students,
faculty, and staff. Engravers are portable and
easy to use. They are available to the borrower
for up to three days. When the engraver is
returned you will receive decals for the items
you engraved.
10
EMERGENCY TELEPHONES
Emergency outdoor telephones have been installed
in areas such as the fan parking lots and bike
paths on campus. The phones provide better
accessibility to the police in the event of an
emergency.
The phones are equipped with two buttons. One is
for emergency situations and the other is for
non-emergency situations. The emergency button
will automatically dial 9-1-1. This will
simultaneously notify the police telecommunicator
the callers location. A strobe light will stay
lit until a police officer de-activates the light.
11
ESCORT SERVICE
The SIUE Police provide an escort service to
those individuals who feel apprehensive about
walking alone on campus. The police will escort
you from one building to another on campus or to
your vehicle in a campus parking lot. This
escort service is not meant to be a primary means
of transportation.
VEHICLE ASSISTANCE
A vehicle assistance service is also available
through the SIUE PD. If you accidentally lock
your keys in your vehicle, just call the Police
Department at extension 3324. The
telecommunicator will need to know your name and
where your vehicle is parked.
Jump starts are available to inoperable vehicles
through the Parking Services Department or jumper
cables can be borrowed from the Police Department.
