4.DPractitioners ad hoc Committee
  • John Harauz
  • Prepared for IEEE CS SAB, 28 Mar 2008
  • For Computer Society Internal Use Only

2
New Practitioners Committee
  • The New Practitioners Committee accepted as a
Community of Interest (CoI) by Stephanie White
under TAB that no longer exists.
  • It will become a CoI under the Technology and
    Conferences (T C) Board - Joseph R. Bumblis is
    the Vice President.
  • New Practitioners Committee will fall under the
    Technical Activities Operating Committee Vice
    Chair Shukri.
  • Joe will continue to lead this committee with
    Shukri's approval.

Our Response to The Need
  • Committee established during the May 2007 BoG
    meetings in LAX.
  • First teleconference on June 19, 2007.
  • Many preliminary ideas discussed.
  • New Practitioners Group in SharedInsights.
  • Second teleconference on July 9, 2007.

5
Recent Activities
  • High-level Goals
  • This committee should be a concentration of
    practitioners to identify the value
  • needed by industry/government to make the CS
    and ComSoc attractive in the
  • areas of membership, conference attendance,
    services, etc.
  • If we can succeed at identifying value, then we
will need to identify how to
  • create this value
  • Thus group will need membership that represents
    the many areas of industry
  • and government probably the software and
    systems engineering
  • communities would be a good start and
  • We will need to visit key industry and
government leaders with a solid proposal
  • regarding how the CS and ComSoc will add value
    to their organizations and
  • help enhance the effectiveness of their
    technical workforce.

6
The Need
  • The Computer Society and Communications Society
have experienced a significant decline in
    industry and government participation in
  • Conferences (attendance and governance)
  • Membership
  • Services (purchased products), and
  • Volunteerism

7
The Need
  • Both CS ExCom and Hay Group consultants
recommended 2.3 Launch a campaign to attract
    more industry practitioners as IEEE-CS
membership is only 5 of 4 million Computer IT
    employees in US
  • Identify and engage industry and government
leaders to identify their needs and mechanism for
working with the entities through surveys,
    consultations and forums
  • What organizational changes are required at the
    CS level?
  • IEEE SA has a corporate advisory group at the BoG
    level

8
The Need
  • PPC has plans for an Industry advisory group for
    SWEBOK.
  • What do the top twenty companies supporting CS
today want from CS in the future?
  • Who are these companies in terms of
  • Members
  • Volunteer leaders
  • Subscriptions
  • Conference attendees

9
The Need
  • According to the Computer Society 2007 Membership
    Survey
  • Those the most happy with the current
  • CS structure are Ph.D.s in academia.
  • Those the most unhappy with the current
  • CS structure are everyone else.

To Illustrate
10
Recommendations per Deb Cooper, Membership
Committee, May 18, 2007
  • We talk about reaching out to the practitioner
but have not defined the term
  • Possible near-term working definition to
    establish focus
  • software developers
  • employed in industry
  • bachelor degree
  • 20-45 years
  • Regions 1-6 (and those with similar needs)

11
Recommendations to improve appeal (per Deb
Cooper, Membership Committee, May 18, 2007)
  • Access to practical content related to my work
  • Tutorials, case studies, technology
comparisons, suggestions on how to educate
    management on technical matters, less
    theory/academic orientation. Training VS
    Enlightenment
  • Help find solutions to technical problems.
  • As much focus on finding as on solutions
    database/web-based support, better
    indexing/searching, improving interface to
    finding and retrieving information.
  • Offer discounts on professional and personal
    services
  • Broaden range of discounted offerings,
improvement competitive of discounts, make them
work outside US, inform members about them.

12
Practitioners Committee Additional
Recommendations
  • Access to Practical Content
  • Speakers at Chapter meetings on standards
  • Podcasts on standards
  • Webcasts on standards
  • Ready Notes on standards
  • Books on standards Annual Practitioner Conference
  • Help find solutions
  • IEEE Expert Now on www.ieee.org/web/education/Expe
    rt_Now_IEEE
  • CS provides members channel for recording and
    selling Webcasts (audio based PowerPoint)

13
Practitioners Committee Additional
Recommendations
  • Offer discounts
  • For example, offer IEEE Software Systems
Engineering Standards collection on CD-ROM to CS
TCSE CS S2ESC members at a discount

14
TCSE's Practitioner-related Conference Activity
  • Developed a technical co-sponsorship ("in
cooperation") relationship with the DoD Systems
    and Software Technology Conference.
  • The IEEE CS and TCSE logos will be displayed on
the conference web site and on promotional
    materials.
  • A full week IEEE CS track, including the CSDP
tutorial at the front end and the CSDP exam at
the back end. The ten presentation slots have
    been filled as follows
