12Enhancement of IMT-2000
- 3G evolution activity has already been started in
3GPP, the standards group responsible for WCDMA
and relevant network standards. - 3GPP is processing a High Speed Downlink Packet
Access (HSDPA) standard which will increase the
WCDMA downlink data rate to about 10 Mbit/s. The
standard is expected to be ready at the end of
2001. - It is expected that there will be new work items
in 3GPP which will further improve the capacity
and data rates of the WCDMA system.
13Enhancement of IMT-2000
- Within the ITU work has also started on
enhancements to IMT-2000 and there are a number
of enhancements to the existing IMT-2000 radio
interfaces being considered this year, e.g. - HSDPA for WCDMA
- Enhanced Data Only (DO) for cdma2000
- Enhanced Data Voice (DV) for cdma2000
- The additional global spectrum for IMT-2000 is
anticipated to be available around 2007 in some
parts of the world such as Europe - The global spectrum for 'systems beyond' is not
anticipated to be identified until the World
Radio Conference in 2006, and not available until
at least 2010 at the earliest.

16Systems Beyond IMT-2000
- We try to avoid use of the term 4G
- It creates an expectation of a new generation
replacing 3G ... - an expectation that nobody likes at the moment
- However, there is a need to discuss ideas for
systems beyond 3G - Research people are already focusing on new
concepts - Systems take 10 years to develop, spectrum
acquisition even longer - Suitable standardisation frameworks must be
established - But to keep things in perspective, remember that
- GSM development began as analogue systems were
being deployed - IMT-2000 concepts were developing as GSM was
being specified
17World Wireless Research Forum (WWRF)
- WWRF is an initiative by Nokia, Ericsson, Siemens
and Alcatel to provide an open research-oriented
discussion forum for all long term research
activities related to further progress of the
radio interfaces. - The objective is to facilitate discussions
related to future wireless activities and to
influence European public research funding
allocation, by developing proposals for RD
priorities and programmes to support national and
international research. - A "Book of Visions 2001" will summarise the key
trends and ideas for the future wireless world,
and contribute to the development of the European
Union's 6th Framework Research Programme. - The inaugural meeting was held on March 6 7
2001 in Munich.

20Spectrum Requires Long Term PlanningVision of
Systems Beyond 3G is Required Now
- WRC '03 (World Radio Conference)
- Consider latest progress on IMT-2000 and Systems
beyond - Terrestrial Interactive Wireless Multimedia
- Decide agenda for WRC '06
- WRC '06
- Consider spectrum requirements for IMT-2000
Systems Beyond - One option is the re-use of existing military and
broadcasting bands - To make this scenario happen the industry needs
action now - Vision (technology and market) is required
before spectrum requirements and then spectrum
ranges can be determined
21Framework for Research
- 3GPP WCDMA and WLAN provide sound evolution path
to ever increasing bit rates -gt focus of
standardization today - Distributed architecture is developed in All-IP
standardization in the 3GPP Release 5 -gtSeamless
Integration of different radio access systems - Focus long term systems research and WWRFbeyond
the above - Activities beyond 3G
- vision for 2010-2020
