What is Service-Learning?

• Academic course
• Community service
• Reflection
• Goal for you to be transformed by the
  experience then you reflect on the connection to
  the course and your experience

Why Do We Do This?

• We are a Jesuit institution and we have a mission
  and identity
• It has to do with being concerned with our
  students, caring about the community, and
  increasing social justice
• It encourages students to become men and women
  for others

How Does it Help the Community?

• Our goal is to try to eliminate injustice and
  service learning helps to do that
• We are working to eliminate a problem that exists
  within our community

Reflection

• Keep a journal
• Questions to consider
• What effect is this having on you?
• How is the experience connected to the course you
  are in?
• What is the injustice that created the need for
  you to do this?
• Sum up your experience according to the
  reflection guide provided for you

Volunteerism vs. Service-Learning

• Service-learning is not volunteerism because it
  is connected to an academic course
• It is not an internship since an internship is
  connected to a major and requires many more hours

How to Get Involved

• Follow the step-by-step instructions in the
  brochure or website
• Choose a community partner from the list online
• Call them to coordinate your schedule
• Dont forget to submit the Liability Form online

Important

• Make sure wherever you go, that you are serving
  people, not doing clerical work for example
• If you want to do service at a hospital, you need
  to get going right away because the applications
  take a few weeks to process
