1
Bailey Bridge
By Erick Cain
2
What is a Bailey Bridge?
  • A Pre-fabricated Truss Bridge designed for the
    military during WWII.

3
Who Invented the Bailey Bridge and Why ?
  • Sir Donald Bailey
  • Civilian Engineer for the Experimental Bridge
    Establishment (EBE) Royal Engineers
  • Military needed a strong, light weight, easily
    manufactured bridge during WWII.

4
Bailey Bridge Requirements
  • Bridge parts could not weigh more then 600 lbs or
    what 6 men could lift.
  • All parts had to be able to fit in a 3 ton GS
    Lorry.
  • Bridge had to be flexible to carry various size
loads, and be adaptable to various size gaps.

5
Bailey Bridge Requirements
  • A 150 foot triple-triple Bailey Bridge had to be
able to carry a Churchill Tank on its transporter
    (70 tons)

6
Why Bailey Bridge Specs are great for
Transportation Departments
  • Versatility
  • Quick and easy to assemble.
  • If needed can be built to carry legal loads.
  • Once purchased inexpensive detour.
  • Many of the same reasons it worked well for the
    military during WWII.

7
Bailey Bridge Drawbacks
  • They are a one lane bridge.
  • Need continual maintenance.
  • Bolt and Nut Tightening
  • Transom Clamp Tightening
  • Timber Plank Checking.

8
Recent Uses of Our Bailey Bridge Parts
  • City of Scio, Oregon Summer 2007.
  • Port of St. Helens
  • Oregon State Parks Pedestrian Bridge.

9
Assembly of Scio Bailey Bridge
  • First we had to locate enough Bailey Bridge for
    the Scio Detour.
  • Oregon National Guard helped us out.

10
Preparation is Key
  • Preparing the site prior to bridge assembly.
  • Ground work for the rollers. (level ground)
  • Proper spacing of the rollers.
  • Enough personnel to assemble.

11
Preparation
  • Ensure enough parts have been delivered to site
    to build the desired structure.
  • If launching bridge ensure enough parts for
    counter weight, and launching nose.

12
Preparation
  • Ensure the clamps and bolts are in proper working
    order
  • Check for unusable floorboards.
  • Ensure all the parts are compatible. MI, MII,
    MIII Bailey Bridge Parts.

16
Importance of Soils
  • Taking in to consideration of the soil when
    constructing the bridge.

17
Building the Launching Nose
  • First several panels are a skeleton frame.
  • Number of panels depend on the length and size of
    bridge being launched
  • Launching frame is separated from the bridge main
    span by the launching link.

18
Assembling the Bridge
  • Begin to assemble the bridge by standing up truss
    panels on the stationary rollers.
  • After truss panels are stood up connect them with
    transoms and transom clamps.

19
Assembling the Bridge
  • Next connect the panels with panel pins and pin
    clips.

20
Assembling the Bridge
  • Next attach
  • Sway Bracing
  • Frame Bracing

21
Building the Bridge
  • After the launching nose begin building the
    actual bridge.
  • Actual Bridge consists of a desired number of
panels deep and tall up to 3 wide and 3 high.
(Scio Bridge is a Single Double)

22
Building the Bridge
  • When building the bridge it is important to keep
    on enough counter weight.

23
Building the Bridge
  • Stringers are placed into position after the
assembly each panel and truss section.
  • The stringers are the support for the floor
    beams.

24
Building the Bridge
  • Launching is done by mostly brute force.
  • Need as many people as possible on each side of
    the bridge to push.
  • Heavy equipment can be utilized to help push and
    pull.

25
Adding the Planking
  • Riding surface is timber planking.
  • Steel Grading is also available, ODOT currently
does not own any bailey bridge grating.

26
Curb
  • Installing a curb is a important factor in
    holding floor boards in place.

27
Finishing Touches
  • Approaches
  • Ramps
  • Traffic Control
