  • Content Standards

4In Communication Arts, students in Missouri
public schools will acquire a solid foundation
which includes knowledge of and proficiency in
writing formally (such as reports, narratives,
essays) and informally (such as outlines,
notes).   This standard receives score points
from the formal essay in Session Two and from a
few of the longer constructed-response items in
Session One (such as written summaries of a
passage).
10
2.1Students will demonstrate within and
integrate across all content areas the ability to
plan and make written, oral and visual
presentations for a variety of purposes and
audiences.   Obviously, for a statewide paper
and pencil test we have to focus on written
presentations for this standard (as opposed to
visual and oral presentations). But, since
anything a student writes could be considered a
written presentation, we have established a few
parameters. One key phrase in this standard is
purposes and audiences. For constructed
response items (Session One) to be considered as
a match for this standard, the item must specify
a writing situation, identifying a distinct
purpose and audience for the students response.
Example Items Imagine that one of your
teachers has asked you to read this passage for
class and capture the essence of the argument in
a short journal response. In your journal entry,
briefly explain the three main points of the
article.   Write a short note to a friend telling
him or her what this passage is about.   Imagine
that the article you have just read was published
in your local newspaper. Write a short (no more
than ½ page) letter to the editor to express your
agreement or disagreement with the author of the
passage.
