Title: Toddlers

1
Toddlers
  • Ages 1-3

2
Tips for Bathing
  • Caregivers need to take time to help young
children develop good attitudes and good hygiene
    skills
  • Baths should be a part of the getting ready for
bed routine. Dont hurry- but allow time for the
child to play and have fun!
  • What household items could toddlers play with in
    the tub?

3
Safety tips
  • Too keep the toddler safe, maintain water level
    of 3 or less.
  • Be sure the bottom of the tub has ridges or rough
    plastic stickers.
  • If the surface is smooth and dangerous, place a
rubber mat, or an old towel on the bottom of the
    tub for safety.
  • Children under 2 ½ need CONSTANT supervision.

4
Caring for the Toddlers teeth
  • Brushing should start at about age 18 mo.
  • 18 mo. Is also recommended age for the first
    dental checkup

5
Dressing
  • Caregivers should encourage self dressing skill
    when a toddler becomes interested.
  • Why is it important to encourage self dressing?
  • Should a child be allowed to get his or her
    clothes dirty when playing outdoor?

6
  • Should a 3 year old be allowed to choose the
clothes he or she wants to wear on a certain day?
  • What happens if the child chooses something
    inappropriate?
  • What strategy might prevent an inappropriate
    choice?

7
Remember the toddlers body when selecting
clothing
  • The neck is still short so look for rib knit
necklines or single thickness collars that lie
    flat
  • The shoulders are sloping-straps will fall down
unless crossed in back or anchored together
  • Diapers are still worn- Pants need fullness in
the seat. Crotch openings are convenient

8
Remember-
  • Toilet training is beginning-elastic waists will
    help
  • The toddler is still crawling-crotch length nees
to be long enough not to bind
  • Toddlers in the 1700s dressed quite differently
    than today!

9
Growth features to look for in toddler clothes
  • Fabrics that stretch
  • Two piece outfits
  • Long tails on blouses and shirts
  • Raglan, kimono, or set-in sleeves with deep cut
    armholes
  • Garments without waists
  • Elastic cuffs that dont bind

10
Undressing is the first step!
  • The first step of undressing is removing shoes,
    socks, hats, coats, and mittens.
  • Dont be surprised when, at about age two, the
toddler undresses completely to express their
    independence!!

11
Ways to make dressing easier!
  • Use a teamwork approach, so they dont get
    discouraged!
  • Example- if the child cant take off overalls
because of the buttons, unbutton the overalls
first and then let them do the rest!
  • Lay the clothes out in the order they are to be
put item. Face each item in the direction that it
willfirst be placed on the body.

12
Ways to make dressing easier!
  • Mark the back of the garments with a dot or an X
on the back and teach the child where it goes.
  • Buy garments with plenty of room to slip over the
    head.
  • Avoid drawstrings or long ties-they are safety
hazards and can cause him to trip and fall or get
    caught.

13
Select clothes with these characteristics for
easy care
  • Machine washable
  • Durable to withstand abrasion from climbing ,
    crawling and laundering
  • Jersey T- shirts knits that stretch for comfort
  • Sweatshirt fleece for warmth and softness
  • Printed fabrics show soil less than plain ones

14
Construction features to look for
  • Seams sewn with small stitches, flat and pliable
  • Finished seams and hems edges
  • Reinforcements at points of strain such as ends
    of zippers and pockets
