Election of 1800

• Jefferson became President and Aaron Burr was his
  VP. Electoral problem led to the 12th Amendment
  later.
• While in office, Jefferson simplified the
  government, reduced the army, reduced expenses,
  taxes and the Banks influence.
• Under Jefferson, the South began to dominate US
  politics.

Judicial Branch

• Adams passed the Judiciary Act of 1801 just
  before leaving office to appoint 13 more federal
  judges.
• It was declared unconstitutional by Chief Justice
  John Marshall in Marbury vs. Madison.
• This led to the principle of Judicial Review.

Westward Expansion

• In 1803, the US under Jefferson bought the
  Louisiana Territory from France for 15 million.
• This is called the Louisiana Purchase.
• Lewis and Clark led a 2 ½ year exploration of the
  new lands. The information they found proved
  transcontinental travel was possible and opened
  the way for Western settlement.
