• He worked as a satellite technician for an
  aerospace firm in California. One night he walked
  off the job, and never went back.
• He worked in Hollywood as a magazine proofreader.
• He loves the sport of dog racing, and entered the
  1983 Iditarod.
• He has an overwhelming belief in young people
  that drives him to write.
• His personal experiences have provided ample
  material from which he creates his powerful
  stories.
• He has written more than 175 books and some 200
  articles and short stories for children and
  adults.
• He had a difficult early life. His father was in
  the service, and Gary saw his father for the
  first time when he was 7.

• He ran away from home at the age of 14 and
  traveled with a carnival. That is where he
  acquired a taste for adventure.
• When he was young, he spent one summer doing
  chores on a farm.
• He has had jobs as an engineer, construction
  worker, ranch hand, truck driver, and sailor.
• Gary has made two rounds of the 1,180-mile
  Alaskan dog sled race, the Iditarod.
• He is planning a single-hand journey around Cape
  Horn.
• Sometimes he lives aboard his 44-foot sailboat,
  which is docked at Ventura Isla Marina,
  California.
• He likes to ride Harley Davidsons.
