  • A Hot Topics in Cataloging Presentation and
    Discussion

2
Todays Objectives
  • Review of recent developments
  • Overview of the Hot Topics
  • Discussion

3
Recent Developments
  • Developments that brought us into this century
  • What new things came out during the 1990s (or
    earlier)?
  • With which we are still grappling?

4
Functional Requirements
  • FRBR
  • Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records
  • Developed in early 1990s
  • What is it and why is it such a big thing?

5
FRBR
  • It is not a standard
  • It is a Model or a Framework
  • Entity-Relationship Model
  • relationship
  • Entity 1 Entity 2

6
The FRBR Model
  • is realized through

  • FRBR
  • AACR3
  • OPACs
  • Endeca (UNCG)
  • Other similar products
  • Metadata
  • Digital Libraries are common place
  • Crosswalks
  • Reinventing the wheel?

10
Overview of the Hot Topics
  • Change is everywhere
  • Change is not new
  • Change seems to be happening faster and faster
  • How do we keep up with change?
  • Participation conferences, classes, workshops
  • Reading AUTOCAT, Blogs, journals

11
Hot Topics
  • AACR3
  • Revision of AACR2 started in 2004
  • AACR3 draft first appeared in Dec. 2004
  • Immediately recognized as inadequate
  • RDA Resource Description and Access
  • Full information found at
  • http//www.collectionscanada.ca/jsc/rda.html

12
RDA Why new rules?
  • Need for a more international code for cataloging
  • New formats, technologies, etc. that set up of
    AACR can no longer accommodate
  • FRBR terminology
  • Clearer definition of the functional objectives
    and principles of the rules

13
RDA Basics
  • Two parts
  • Part A Description
  • Part B Access Point Control
  • Each release of a draft is followed by a period
    of constituency review
  • FRBR and FRAR are the underlying conceptual
    models
  • Objectives and Principles http//www.collectionsc
    anada.ca/jsc/docs/5rda-objectives.pdf

14
More RDA Basics
  • Basically a change in perspective
  • The approach (theory) to cataloging an item will
    be different
  • We dont know how this will change the end
    result, if any
  • ISBD will not be mandatory
  • Biggest sticking point for todays catalogers
  • Being developed so that other communities will
    also use it
  • Metadata communities in particular

15
RDA Timeline
  • March-June 2007 Review of revised chapter 3
  • July-September 2007 Review of revised chapters
    6-7
  • December 2007-March 2008 Review of part B
  • July-September 2008 Review of complete draft of
    RDA
  • 2009 Release of RDA

16
Influences on RDA
  • Part A Description
  • FRBR is biggest influence
  • Part B Access Point Control
  • FRAR will be the influence behind this part

17
FRAR what was that?
  • Part B of RDA influenced by FRAR
  • Functional Requirements for Authority Records
  • Being developed by the IFLA Working Group FRANAR
  • Working Group on Functional Requirements and
    Numbering of Authority Records

18
FRAR Terms of Reference
  • To define functional requirements of authority
    records
  • To study the feasibility of an International
    Standard Authority Data Number (ISADN)
  • To serve as the official IFLA liaison to and work
with other interested groups concerning authority
    files

19
Goal of the FRANAR Model
  • To provide an understanding of how authority
    files function currently
  • To clarify the underlying concepts to provide a
basis for refining and improving on current
    practice in the future
  • Similar to the FRBR model objectives

20
More information on FRAR
  • Presentation by Glenn Patton at IFLA 2005
  • FRAR Extending FRBR Concepts to Authority Data
  • http//www.ifla.org/IV/ifla71/papers/014e-Patton.p

  • Presentation includes the entity-relationship
models for FRAR with brief explanations

    authorities
