  • Websites that would most likely be accessed by
parents or students in need of help
  • To document features of each tutoring option
  • Seven of the most popular tutoring websites were
    evaluated extensively

3
Seven Popular Automated Sites
  • ALEKS

Human Tutoring Options(n 44)
  • Majority of sites targeted middle and high school

    relied primarily on asynchronous communication
    (email)
  • Only 2 sites assessed students knowledge prior
    to tutoring
  • 15 used college grad students, 9 used teachers,
18 claimed that tutors had advanced degrees

10
Automated Tutoring Options(n 68)

    interactive)
  • 55 were primarily info delivery or drill
    practice programs

    intermittent quizzes (n 16)
  • Only 2 sites assessed students knowledge prior

Conclusions
  • Few high quality options for students
  • Majority are automated
  • A lot of false advertising regarding features of
    sites and learning gains
  • Most tutoring options are not free and are
    expensive
  • Real-time dialogue, interactive simulations, and
animated agents are rare in on-line tutoring
    options
