2Introduction
- Improvement of online services
- The use and misuse of services
- Focus Viruses and Denial of Service (DOS)
variants
3Research objectives
To focus on the emergence of DOS attacks and
viruses
Raise awareness of crime, misconduct and security
risks inherent in the cyber environment.
Learn how each form of attack works, and how they
are classified under cyber crime
Find out what can be done when someone is subject
to these attacks, provide statistics of all kinds
related to the project, and have fun
4Research Method
- Surveyed a total of 71 people
- Done both in person and through email
- Interview with several professionals
- Range of questions, from viruses to DOS, to cyber
crime in general. - Sources of information from the internet and a
few published journals we found online.
5OUR Assumptions
- Most of the people we interview have internet
connections at home - Most people have anti-virus software in their
computers - Most people do not know what a Denial of Service
(DOS) attack is - Cyber crimes will increase in the future
6Survey Results - Viruses
Most of our respondents have anti-virus software
(Take note 84 have been infected before)
7Survey Results Denial of Service Attacks
List of websites www.blizzhackers.com www.blogspot
.com www.yahoo.com www.symantec.com
Most respondents actually do not care whether a
service has history of DOS attacks
8Survey Results ICT Crime in General
9 May article on Viet NUS student convicted of
cyber crime.
Question Would you accept files sent by friends
readily?
9Survey Results ICT Crime in General 2
Here we have results for 2 survey questions
Most people consider a need for an increase in
cyber crime laws and more education
Should students be educated about cyber crime?
Do you think we need stricter law policies so
that we can prevent cyber crimes more effectively?
10Survey Results
Some interesting results
Generally, most of survey respondents think that
anti-virus programs are doing a good job dealing
with viruses in particular
Whether a companys online services has been
attacked with DOS or not does not really affect a
persons decision to continue using the service.
People regard DOS attacks to have as severe
effects as viruses, if not more, but they know
extremely little about this form of attack in the
first place!
People are troubled when they find out that they
have been infected by viruses, yet most do not
know much about, or have little idea on how to
deal with them

12Implications
Trouble gathering data on DOS few have heard of
it, and those who do know about it were clueless
as to what it does
Many respondents do not answer to the questions
that require reasons
Lack of statistics on cyber crime on the Internet
most from Canada and Australia, very little
from the US, surprisingly!
Many variants of DOS attacks!
13Conclusion
Cyber crime no matter how much we do to combat
viruses DOS attacks, they will still remain
Effort should be put into increasing the
awareness towards computer security issues
DOS attacks by their very nature are difficult to
defend against and will continue to be an
attractive and effective form of attack.
Education a double-edged sword
"The only secure computer is one thats
unplugged, locked in a safe, and buried 20 feet
under the ground in a secret location...and Im
not even too sure about that one. Attributed
Dennis Huges, FBI
14What we have learnt
Difficult to survey the impact of DOS attacks on
corporate systems companies interviewed did not
wish to reveal vulnerabilities, etc.
Learnt much about DOS attacks previously
unclear about subject too!
Owning an anti-virus program does not mean total
protection against viruses
We had some fun and some pain as well
