Title: Tips for Successfully Integrating Technology

1
Tips for Successfully Integrating Technology
  • Love kids and education 1st technology 2nd
  • Classroom climate should be challenging but not
    threatening to students
  • Center approach to teaching (students are
    explorers)
  • Heterogeneous grouping
  • Appointing a student moderator for each group
  • Good discipline and classroom management
  • Know your software
  • Be a facilitator not lecturer
  • Collaborate with other teachers

2
How to Set Up Computers in Your Classroom?
  • Presentation station-Teach a lesson, lead a class
discussion, let students take center stage, class
    research to build background knowledge
  • Learning station-Students work on programs and
projects individually or in small groups,
    research topics
  • A classroom computer can be a motivating and
powerful tool. It can increase self-concept
    through participation in exciting projects!

  • The flag stands for people who fought
in the war. The flag doesnt stand far ar. The
flag stands for 50 states. Why in the world do so
many hate? The flag is like the U.S.A.
I think we all should pledge
    to pray.

Pac Man Frog
  • The Pac Man frogs common name is called a
horned frog. Its families name is a
Leptodactylide. The frogs are called mouths with
legs because the mouth appears to be the entire
front half of the body. Our pac man frog has will
eat mice one day but now he eats crickets. Taylor
    Touchet

7
Our Rabbit Luly
  • When you get a rabbit it can easily learn how to
use a litter box. If you want to play with your
rabbit you will have to be gentle. If you want an
adult rabbit add a little hay. You want a card
board box to let it hide. You still have to clean
its do. Rabbits are wonderful pets.

8
Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches Kaitlin L.

  • Males and females are 3 to 4 inches in length.
Females have 20 to 40 babies per month, that the
adults do NOT eat. The babies will be adult size
in 2 to 3 months. A cockroach is so smooth and so
soft, it is easy to chew for other reptiles. Our
    roach is fun!

Rewards of Technology
  • Projects done by the students create ownership
    and reinforces learning
  • Students are motivated
  • Increases self-concept of students
  • Projects require higher level thinking
  • Real-world application that supports research,
    design, analysis, composition, and communication
  • Has power to help students obtain, organize,
    manipulate, and display information

Alexs Amazing Trip To Saturn
  • Dear Mrs. Turner,
I have been looking for facts about
Saturn. I have found lots of interesting
facts such as Saturn was named after the
Roman god of agriculture, Saturn is the
sixth planet from the sun, Saturn is the
second largest planet in our solar System,
Saturn has thousands of rings, and Saturn
has over twenty moons ! I have written
lots of information about Saturn. Saturn is
my brothers favorite planet. I think
Saturn is interesting because of its
rings. I know lots of things about Saturn,
but there is a lot more to go !

12
Technology Binders to Highlight their Work!
13
How much time is needed?
  • Technology integration takes longer to implement
    with students
  • Requires more advance planning and preparation on
    the teachers part
  • Once the planning is done and the students begin
to work the teacher becomes facilitator
  • Recess time used for kids to catch up with their
    work

14
Student File Saving
  • One of the greatest challenges to technology
    integration is file saving
  • Without clear guidelines from the teacher that
    become habits, students may
  • Not name files they save
  • Not save files in the right place
  • Not save files at all
  • Start project over because theyve lost it

15
Saving Files to the Network
  • Teach students to do two things
  • Name the file
  • Where to save the file
  • The greatest advantage to saving the file on the
network is that it can be accessed from other
    computers on the network!

16
Create a Website Folder
  • Quickest way to encourage students to waste time
on a computer is to give them a URL (internet
    address) to type by hand.
  • Instead create a shared folder on the network
with the sites for a lesson bookmarked.
  • Download a shortcut on all other computers

17
What should drive the activities?
  • Strong curricular content should drive the design
    of technology-supported activities.
  • Keep the focus on educational needs and
    instructional goals.
  • Research has shown that technology and
heterogeneous grouping will help at-risk student
to develop higher order skills and to function in
    the world beyond the classroom
  • Authentic tasks should have real-world
application. Higher HOTS are important components
    of these tasks.

18
Assessment of Student Work
  • Develop procedures, checklists and rubrics to
help monitor and document each students
progress. Let the children know ahead what is
    expected of them.
  • Assign points to each stations assignment.
Students are accountable for the work done. There
is no time for wasting valuable minutes.

19
Research on Cooperative Learning
  • Research strongly supports the advantages of
    cooperative learning over competition and
    individualized learning.
  • Leads to higher group and individual achievement
  • Higher quality reasoning strategies
  • More frequent transfer of these strategies to the
    members
  • More new ideas and solutions to problems
  • Students more intrinsically motivated,
intellectually curious, caring of others, and
    psychologically healthy.

20
Technology Incorporation into Reading
  • Story Wild Shots
  • To build background I used the laptop/projector
to do a web, and dev vocabulary
  • Tues.-Fri. stations were set up
  • Station 1 Tech. research classroom pets and
    animals of the Galapagos Islands
  • Station2Research pets using the printed
    information
  • Station3Observe pets
  • Station4Guided reading Hunting with My Camera

21
  • Next story Little Grunt
  • Researched on laptop/projector about dinosaurs,
caves, volcanoes, author, fossils, did a web in
Kidspiration Why Kids Want a Pet
  • Station1 Tech. Pet Research Powerpoint
  • Station 2 Rock Painting
  • Station3 Research dinosaurs/volcanoes (rubric
    for packet)
  • Station 4 Guided reading Pets Need People

22
Science Stations the Same Week
  • Mon. discussed ecosystems and the stations
  • Station 1 Technology Research different
ecosystems that are bookmarked, note cards
  • Station 2 Complete ecosystem booklet using the
    text to research
  • Station 3 Group guided non-fiction bk. 3 index
    cards
  • Station 4 Guided reading with teacher
  • All of the research will used to make an
ecosystem at home.A rubric and checklist is
    provided. (due in 3 weeks)

  • Become comfortable learning about
technology along with the students, and
repeatedly model higher order thinking skills so
that students can see positive ways to approach
new learning challenges. Good luck incorporating
technology into your curriculum! God Bless!
