3
Jesus Ministry Luke 8-10
  • LK 81 After this, Jesus traveled about from one
town and village to another, proclaiming the good
news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with
him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of
    evil spirits and diseases

4
  • LK 91 When Jesus had called the Twelve together,
he gave them power and authority to drive out all
demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them
out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the
    sick.

5
  • LK 101 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two
others and sent them two by two ahead of him to
every town and place where he was about to go.

6
  • 2 He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but
the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest,
therefore, to send out workers into his harvest
    field.

7
  • 109 Heal the sick who are there and tell them,
The kingdom of God is near you.

8
  • LK 1017 The seventy-two returned with joy and
said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your
    name."

9
Jesus Pattern Mark 1-6
  • I do, they watch
  • They do, I watch
  • They multiply

10
Jesus our Model I do
  • MK 132 That evening after sunset the people
brought to Jesus all the sick and
demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at
the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had
various diseases. He also drove out many demons,
but he would not let the demons speak because
    they knew who he was.

11
Jesus our Model We do
  • Mark 314 He appointed twelve--designating them
apostles --that they might be with him and that
he might send them out to preach 15 and to have
    authority to drive out demons.

12
Jesus our Model You do
  • MK 612 They went out and preached that people
should repent. 13 They drove out many demons and
anointed many sick people with oil and healed
    them.

13
Jesus
  • Our life
  • Our message
  • Our motivation
  • Our method

14
Philosophic Foundations
  • Moving away from active pastors and passive
    congregations
  • Moving toward mobilizing pastors and mobilized
    congregations
  • Moving from addition to multiplication

15
Addition to Multiplication
  • We recruit and equip everyone to do ministry
  • We recruit and equip leaders to multiply ministry
  • We pay pastors and staff to multiply ministry
    leaders

16
Staffing Keys
  • Employ pastors who can multiply ministries
    (leaders and groups)
  • Evaluate pastors on their ability to be do
    ministry and multiply ministries
  • A key indicator of ministry health (besides PE)
    is of lay leaders

17
Application Point
  • How many people are in your congregation (1.5 x
    attendance)
  • How many people in your congregation are involved
    in ministry (Goal 50-75)
  • How many people in your congregation are in
    leading/pastoring roles (Goal 10-25)

18
Application Example
  • Attendance 120
  • Congregation 180
  • Involved in ministry (adults and teens) 90-135
  • Involved in leading/pastoring (e.g. cell leaders,
    SS teachers, AWANA leaders) 18-45

19
PREPARE Leaders
  • Pray
  • Recruit
  • Equip
  • Place
  • Assess
  • Re-place
  • Encourage

Coaching Appointment Overview
  • The Five Cs

24
The Five Cs
  • Connecting
  • Care
  • Celebrate
  • Challenge
  • Create

25
Connect
  • Take the initiative to meet with others
  • If it goes well, schedule the next appointment
    before you leave
  • Seek to meet no less than once a month

26
Care
  • You show care as you take time
  • Listen well
  • Appropriate physical touch is great

27
Celebrate
  • Ask what is going well
  • Be demonstrative in your expression
  • Dont include your similar accomplishments
  • Most guys need practice to get good at this

28
Challenge
  • This begins AFTER connecting, caring, and
    celebrating
  • Use questions to help the person to self-discover
the challenges they want to take on
  • Ask what skills are needed to meet the challenge
and help resource the person in those areas.

29
Create
  • Co-labor with the person and the Holy Spirit in
    creating a plan
  • Help the person to balance optimism and realism
  • Provide a few (just a few) insights from your
    experience
  • Ask the person what questions you should ask
regarding this plan next time you meet

30
Types of Questions

  • Feeling Are the nationals feeling good about
    this transition?

  • Action What are you going to do to help the
national church take more ownership in this

Appendix A The Story of Joseph from Cyprus
46
A familiar story...
  • Acts 51 Now a man named Ananias, together with
his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.

47
Go back two verses
  • Acts 436 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the
apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of
    Encouragement),
  • Acts 437 sold a field he owned and brought the
money and put it at the apostles' feet.

48
Saul and the Disciples
  • Acts 926 When he (Saul) came to Jerusalem, he
tried to join the disciples, but they were all
afraid of him, not believing that he really was a
    disciple.

49
Barnabas and Saul
  • Acts 927 BUT Barnabas took him and brought him
to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his
journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had
spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had
preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus.

50
All heaven breaks out
  • Acts 1120 Some of them...went to Antioch and
began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the
good news about the Lord Jesus.
  • Acts 1121 The Lord's hand was with them, and a
great number of people believed and turned to the
    Lord.

51
Jerusalems Response
  • Acts 1122 News of this reached the ears of the
church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to
    Antioch.

52
Barnabas Response
  • Acts 1123 When he arrived and saw the evidence
of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged
them all to remain true to the Lord with all
    their hearts.

53
The Qualities of Barnabas
  • Acts 1124 He was a good man, full of the Holy
Spirit and faith, and a great number of people
    were brought to the Lord.

54
Ministry Placement
  • Acts 1125 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look
    for Saul,
  • Acts 1126 and when he found him, he brought him
to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul
met with the church and taught great numbers of
people. The disciples were called Christians
    first at Antioch.

55
Barnabas and Saul
  • (Acts 1130) This they did, sending their gift
to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.
  • (Acts 1225) When Barnabas and Saul had finished
    their mission...
  • (Acts 137) The proconsul, an intelligent man,
sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to
    hear the word of God.

56
Paul and Barnabas
  • (Acts 1342-43) As Paul and Barnabas were
leaving the synagogue, the people invited them...
  • devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and
    Barnabas...
  • (Acts 1346) Then Paul and Barnabas answered
    them boldly...

57
They called him Hermes
  • (Acts 1412) Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul
they called Hermes because he was the chief
    speaker.

58
Multiplying the Process
  • Acts 1536 Some time later Paul said to
Barnabas, "Let us go back and visit the brothers
in all the towns where we preached the word of
the Lord and see how they are doing."
  • Acts 1537 Barnabas wanted to take John, also
    called Mark, with them,

59
Multiplying the Process
  • Acts 1538 but Paul did not think it wise to
take him, because he had deserted them in
Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the
    work.
  • Acts 1539 They had such a sharp disagreement
that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and
    sailed for Cyprus,
