Boston Reed College
  • Externship Partners- Boston Reed has built
    partnerships with 5200 healthcare providers
    including physicians offices, hospitals and
    clinics, so students can complete the externship
    portion of the program.
  • Externship Outcomes- 98 of students complete the
    externship portion of the program successfully.
    Of those completing, 50 received an
    outstanding rating and 44 received an above
    average rating.
  • Job Placement While we do not offer a formal job
    placement program, 85 of those graduates self-
    reporting are using the skills they learned in a
    job or another educational setting.

  • The healthcare industry is predicted to grow at
    a rate of 28 percent between 2002 and 2012,
    adding 3.5 million new jobs-Assistant Secretary
    for Employment and Training, US Department of
    Labor, Emily Stover DeRocco
  • During the past 12 months, the health care sector
    overall has grown by 363,000 jobs, making it the
    largest industry in the United States, accounting
    for 13.5 million jobs.
  • Six of the ten fastest growing occupations from
    2005-12 are in the allied health field.

Health Industry Need
  • The federal government is predicting a shortage
    of close to 1 million nurses in the U.S. by 2020,
    according to a report released in July by
    PricewaterhouseCoopers Health Research
    Institute.
  • By 2010, 1.7 million nurses will be needed, but
    only 635,000 will be available. Demand is highest
    for nurses in emergency room, operating room,
    intensive care, pediatrics and labor and delivery
    room.

What is a Clinical Medical Assistant? Where do
they Work?
  • Clinical medical assistants assist physicians and
    other medical professionals with patient care.
  • Clinical Medical Assistants work under the direct
    supervision of a physician or licensed medical
    professional (nurses/nurse practitioners) and
    perform many clinical tasks
  • Vital signs, (blood pressure, pulse, heart
    rate)
  • Procedures, (suture removal, injections, and
    other clinical tasks related to patient care.
  • Medical records recording
  • They refer any questions regarding treatment,
    symptoms or health matters to a physician or
    nurse.
  • Work in a physicians office or a clinic setting.

    physicians office or clinical environment.
  • Perform procedures for rooming a patient.
  • Obtain vital signs of a patient.
  • Perform basic wound care.
  • Drape patients.

Clinical Medical Assistant
  • There is no state registration for Clinical
    Medical Assistants in California.
  • This program satisfies all training guidelines
    established by the California Certifying Board
    for Medical Assistants (CCBMA)
  • Graduates will be qualified to apply for optional
    certification through CCBMA. Some employers
    prefer certification.

  • Basic English and Math Prescreening
  • 18 years of age by externship placement
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)

  • ENGLISH LANGUAGE MATH SCREENING ASSESSMENT
  • In order to succeed in the course you must have a
    basic mastery of the English language as well as
    knowledge of basic mathematical calculations.

  • Access to the Internet, an email account and
    access to a printer are required.
  • Required weekly handouts for the course are
    available online and must be printed out and
    brought to each class session. Print out the
    first weeks materials prior to the first class

After Completing Course Before Externship
  • Proof of competency in or completion of basic
    computer operations
  • Prior to externship, proof of completion of
  • CPR For the Healthcare Provider
  • Current Physical Examination,
  • Tuberculosis screening (TB test)
  • Resume

Externships
  • Externship placement coordinated by Boston Reed
    College staff
  • Boston Reed has contracts with national retail
    pharmacies outpatient clinic and physicians
    offices
  • Hours range from 16-40 hours/week
  • Students placed within 90 days of course
    completion if available 40 hrs/wk, 180 days if
    less than 40 hrs/wk.
  • Students are not paid during externship

After Completing the Externship
  • Students turn in Externship Booklet to Boston
    Reed.
  • Students receive Certificate of Completion.
  • Medical Assistants can pursue optional
    professional associations or certifications.
  • Continue to pursue lifelong learning.
  • Get a Job!
