Definition

• According to The Merriam Webster Online
  Dictionary, to plagiarize is to
• steal and pass off (the ideas or words of
  another) as one's own.
• use (another's production) without crediting
  the source.

Motlows Plagiarism Policy

• Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of
  academic dishonesty are prohibited. Students
  guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or
  indirectly through participation or assistance,
  are immediately responsible to the instructor of
  the class....The instructor has the authority
  to assign an F or a zero for the exercise or
  examination or to assign an F in the course
  (from page 66 of Motlows 2007-2008 Student
  Handbook).

Examples of Plagiarism

• Turning in a paper or using parts of a paper that
  you bought, borrowed, downloaded, or copied from
  the Internet.
• Copying the exact words of a source without using
  quotation marks and a citation.
• Summarizing or paraphrasing an idea or
  information from a source without a citation.

Ways to Prevent Plagiarism

• Keep track of your sources.
• Take careful notes.
• Acknowledge all ideas and information from your
  sources unless they are common knowledge.
• When you quote phrases or sentences from your
  sources, make sure your quotes are exact and in
  quotation marks.

• When you paraphrase and summarize your sources,
  be sure to use your own words and sentence
  structure but keep the same meaning.
• Cite your sources when you use them in your
  paper.
• List all of your sources at the end of your
  paper.
