086 LOCATING STIMULI USING MARBLES
Brain relies on information from several sources
to form impressions and to interpret. The
experiment demonstrates that the connections that
exist between the various receptors and the brain
are the foundation for this interpretation.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
Glass marbles of different diameters.
2
Place a glass marble with a diameter 1cm on the
floor. Cross second finger (middle finger) over
the first finger (index finger) of one hand and
press firmly on the marble with the finger tips.
Close your eyes and roll the marble forwards and
backwards, side to side and then with a circular
motion. Continue this exercise for a minute.

When the eyes are closed, the impression is as if
there are two marbles with the fingers pressing
between the two. When the fingers are not
crossed, the areas of the finger-tips would be
stimulated only by two surfaces separated in
space. The connections that exist between the
receptors and the brain are the foundation for
this interpretation. When the two areas are
stimulated simultaneously by the same object in
the absence of visual evidence, the brain makes
its usual interpretation, giving the sensation of
two objects. What do the results show? The
results show that we normally rely on information
from several sources for our interpretations.
If you watch the fingers and marble, it is far
more difficult to elicit the impression of two
objects.
