Artist Statement
  • Art has always been a major part of my life,
whether it was through the various museums my
mother insisted on visiting no matter where we
went (Washington, D.C. New York City, New York
Malaga, Spain.), through my mothers own
paintings and web design, or through the love of
drawing that was fostered in childhood.
  • I like to look back on my earlier work and sum
it up with the words, I just didnt know I
couldnt. My very first doodles began with a
preoccupation with cats, but by far my largest
influence came from the Japanese cartoons known
as anime, specifically the television show
Sailor Moon. My earlier efforts show a clear
correlation with the style of Sailor Moons
creator, Naoko Takeuchi. Gradually this love for
drawing cartoons combined with a deep love for
story telling and developed into the production
of comic pages and books starring various
    characters including, sometimes, myself. This
brings us to what I believe has become the center
of my work as an artist.
  • My art history teacher, Dr. Susan Euler, once
claimed that the most mentally unstable artists
tend to have the most self-portraits (e.g.,
Munch, Michelangelo, etc) because they are on a
sort quest of self-discovery. I dont know how
much truth actually lies in this sentiment, but
it is a rather romantic notion that I choose to
embrace for myself. Looking through my collection
of characters that I use most often in comics and
stories, one can see that I consistently use
myself as a model in one way or another. Very
recently this process of self-discovery has
translated into various other media as well. For
these reasons I think art has become a way to
connect more fully with both myself and with the
world around me, a way of traveling inside an
object instead just looking at it from the
    outside.
  • One of my greatest ambitions when it comes to
art is to one day acquire the patience to master
the medium of oil paints and paint with
beautiful, clear realism like Jan van Eyck, once
of my favorite artists of all time. In addition,
I would eventually like to develop a successful
comic book. Both will take a lot of effort and
concentration, but in the meantime I would like
to focus on expanding my artistic horizons by
discovering and becoming skilled in the use of
various media before transitioning art from a
    hobby to a career choice.

Artemis Description
  • Let me start by saying I dont like the face.
The shadows are all wrong, but Im too afraid to
    go near it.
  • This sketch took several days to draw out in
graphite. Afterwards, however, I feel a few hours
of inkwork completely ruined the image.
  • The shadows are a bit overwhelming--- even I
feel dizzy when I look at the picture. The one
point I do like, though, is the hair it adds a
nice focal point where the eye can get lost in
the folds of the dress and---whoa! Back to the
    hair.
  • My biggest trouble aside from inking was
repeating the swirl pattern. The original reason
for even adding the swirl was because my
inspiration was classic Art Nouveau pieces and I
tried to give my picture that same organic feel
    to it.
  • The name Artemis is sort of a cop-out I have
no real idea whether the woman sitting there is
an incarnation of Artemis (Greek moon goddess) or
Diana (Roman equivalent), or any goddess at all
    for that matter.

Emotion Leaves Description
  • The evolution of this piece was, in a word,
excruciating. I went through several different
ideas before finally deciding on this one, and
even then the initial sketch took many re-tries.
  • Overall, I would have to say that despite my
attempts anger came across as the dominate
emotion, most likely due to the fact that it is
the only face appearing to have open eyes and
therefore communicating directly to the audience.
The angle of sadness strikes me as odd, and,
ironically, I am not happy with happiness
because of how strange the shape turned out, as
well as the blue flecks that ended up streaked
    through it.
  • The leaves in the background are one of my
favorite parts I put a lot of research into how
the leaves looked, so the colors and shapes are
all accurate and even native to the North
    Carolina region!
