Plan Background
FEMA mandated that Hazard Mitigation Plans be
prepared to insure disaster relief funding.
In 2000 the City prepared a Hazard Mitigation
Plan to assist victims of Hurricane Floyd.
It was adopted by the Council and approved by the
State.

Plan Results
20.8M in Federal/State funds helped buyout 353
residential units, relocate families, create
new housing developments
  • However, impact was greater
  • Over 966 damaged structures
  • 764 flooded structures
  • Major impact on public facilities

    flooding hazards and includes development of
    ordinances to protect development in Floodplain
    areas, implementation of flood hazard warning
    systems along streams, consideration for
    "buy-out" of additional flood prone properties,
    continued evolvement of City's Storm Water
    Management program to develop detention ponds
    along major streams improvement of drainage
    facilities in accord with drainage study plans.
