Title: Using Heart Rate to Monitor Exercise Intensity
1Using Heart Rate to Monitor Exercise Intensity
When exercising you generally want to work at
55 85 of your maximal target heart rate.
How do you find your maximal target heart rate?
Simply take (220 - your age) and that will
give you your maximal target heart rate. From
there find 55 85 of that number and you have
your target heart rate range to aim for while
exercising. Below is a chart to use as a general
guide.
How do I measure my heart rate when
exercising? There are two places on your
body from which to take your pulse figure out
your heart rate one is on your wrist (radial
pulse) and the other is one your neck (carotid
pulse). Radial Pulse
Carotid Pulse To measure
your pulse take two fingers (generally index and
middle) and place them lightly on either of your
radial arteries which located on the palm side of
you hands, beneath your thumbs (see diagram) or
on your carotid arteries which can be found on
either side of your neck (see diagram). When
measuring your pulse at the carotid artery make
sure to press lightly as pressing too hard may
cause you to become lightheaded or faint.
Once you have found your pulse simply count the
number of beats you feel for 10 seconds, then
multiply that number by 6 and you will have your
heart rate. This can be performed during or just
after exercise.
