Freeing the Slaves

• Lincoln waited for a Union victory in the east -
  Battle of Antietam.
• Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on
  1/1/1862.
• Slaves fled when Northern troops were near by.
• Hurt the Southern economy.

• Many Northern Democrats upset. They wanted to
  restore the Union, not end slavery.
• They thought ending slavery went too far.

African Americans and the War

• The navy was enlisting African Americans first.
• The army eventually did for practical reasons
  they needed men.
• Contrabands (escaped slaves) joined in SC, LA,
  and KS.

  imprisonment.
• Military service unfair.
• Rioters in NY city against freed slaves.

• Lack of supplies for soldiers.
• Food shortages and riots.
• Government problems poor southerners protested
  the new draft law.

Life on the Home Front

• Women and children worked the factories and
  farms.
• Women provided medical care Clara Barton
  medical supplies for the Union.
• Started the American Red Cross.
• Andersonville in GA military prison, with no
  shelter and little food. 150 died each day.
